Towards GA

I think I've probably got this up to a B, at least as far as I'll be able to take it. With some pics, expansion of the viticulture section and a bit more in the Italy section and some general tidying up, it'll be a GA candidate I reckon. FlagSteward 17:11, 16 June 2007 (UTC)

I added a picture I took last week, although the grapes are clearly not yet ripe.

I once read (and I can't remember where) that Sangiovese was traditionally used in Italian blends because it was too ordinary with no special features or flavors, and it wasn't until it went to California that Sangiovese developed the body and flavor to distinguish itself as viable stand-alone varietal. Lead picture

I notice User:Agne27 replaced my picture in this edit. Personally I still like mine better (sniff), because it showed the leaf shape and the purple color of the grapes better. My image is also in much better focus when you click on it to view the larger size.

I didn't replace it. I just moved it down to the USA section. There were two lines of thought at work 1.) It was the only picture relevant to American Sangiovese that could work in that area and 2.) While I agree that your picture is better focused, for the lead infobox pic I think a picture of post-veraison grape cluster is more ideal since it not only shows the coloring of the grapes more accurately but also the shape of the cluster better. OK. I agree with your reasoning, although I think that among the 3 pictures of grape bunches in this article, we shouldn't have a fuzzy one as the lead. Anyway, I'll be taking more pictures eventually, so we'll have a better one someday. ~Amatulić (talk) 18:10, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Name - Urban legend?

Guys, where does this "blood of Jove" story come from and why is it given here as "Thruth"? I know that it is currently quoted almost everywhere as the origin of the name, but that was completely unheard of before the 1990's! Before that it has always been explained to come from "San Giovese" (simply "holy Jupiter's [grape]"). Problem of course is that most of the online content is after that date so the earlier examples of the word origin are not easily available. In general, Italians have usually never associated wine with blood (that is more Spanish idea and of course comes from the Christianity which might explain the one stories around this crediting a priest with the name) and the word "sangue" (blood) is pronounced very differently (with ŋ) than how the grape name is pronounced (where n and g are in different syllables). Italians especially seem to be pretty much against this "blood of Jove", example e.g. here: IT Chefs Pjsinc (talk) 11:27, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
