Some history would be good; I came here from the Krag-Petersson article (currently on the front page) because I'd seen that the RNN adopted the rifle in 1876, but as far as I can tell there's nothing at all about the 19th-century RNN. Loganberry (Talk) 22:44, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Merger

KNM

KNM stands for "Kongelig Norsk Marine". If it were to stand for "Kongelige Norske Marine" one would have to add "Den" in front. "Kongelig Norsk Marine" means Royal Norwegian Navy, "Den Kongelige Norske Marine" means The Royal Norwegian Navy.Inge 14:45, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

It is very difficult to find references to this on internet, because KNM is almost never written in its full form. It is just one of those things you are supposed to know I guess. Googling will get you 28 hits on Kongelig Norsk Marine and 437 for Kongelige Norske Marine, that is because Den Kongelige Norske Marine is the definite form. But in the pamphlet Fakta om Forsvaret 2006 issued by the Ministry of Defense Template:ISBN-7 KNM is explained as standing for Kongelig Norsk Marine. Also an article explaining. KNM Tordenskjold and KNM Harald Haarfagre

We normally substitute KNM with HNoMS when we name Norwegian naval ships in English. This does not apply to the two schools named after former ships. KNM Harald Haarfagre is translated Royal Norwegian Naval Basic Training Establishment, and KNM Tordenskjold is translated Royal Norwegian Naval Training Establishment. KV

Since "KV" stands for Kongelig Vaktjeneste (Kongelig means Royal), shouldn't then the English version be Royal Norwegian Coast Guard, not Norwegian Coast Guard? Manxruler 13:28, 20 June 2007 (UTC)

KV stands for Kystvakt, Coast Guard. I know several people whom have worked/and work in te Kystvakt. There has although been intepreded at Kongelig Vaktjenste (Royal Watch Duty) in some citations (Where I have come a cross one of them), I am under te belief that this predates the date when Kystvakt was established (After 12 nautical mile zone and 200 mile Economic Exclusive Zone) and hence establishment just after. The Kystvakt is funded by The Justicedepartement but the ships receive KNM as Royal Norwegian Navy vessels when tasked abroad (Relates to predominately the Nordkapp Class). The chairs turn and the ships of the Coast Guard are tasked as military if a conflict/war brakes out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by STP-Norway (talk • contribs) 06:23, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

Two LPDs?!

It would greatly surprise me if the RNoN got two LPDs. As I understand it the two logistics ships that are planned is an AOR and a ro-ro vessel. -- Nidator 15:51, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

WWII exile in Halifax NS

I see the passage about being based in Britain during the war, but on the waterfront in Halifax, Nova Scotia there's a memorial to the crew of teh RNN and the Norwegian Merchant Marine who were based out of Halifax during World War II. I'll take a picture of the monument and post it here, and also will ask in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which it's next to, for further information.Skookum1 (talk) 15:57, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
