Accents in Russian names are necessary to determine correct pronunciation. Even if your computer cannot display them, it is not a reason to remove them. — Monedula 22:18, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

As far as I know, accents in Russian are always situated over the stressed syllable vowel (ударение помещают над гласной ударного слога), not over the following consonant. You always place your accents over the following consonants. I have no time to figure out how to put a stressing accent over any letter, but your usage strikes me as wrong. Correct me if I'm wrong.--Azazello 07:26, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The fact is, Unicode makes use of "combining diacritical marks", which are inserted after the main letter, but displayed above (or below) it. The only correct way to accentuate Russian text is to put "combining acute accent" (U+0301 or ́) after the stressed vowel. Unicode-compliant browsers should then display the accent mark above the vowel. If you see the accent mark not above the vowel or see something else at all, then you simply got a bad browser or a bad font. Perhaps changing fonts will do it. — Monedula 12:04, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)
OK, you're right. Thanks, I stand corrected. --Azazello 13:57, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

In some systems, if a font doesn't contain a combined accented character, or if the system is not able to superimpose the accent over the letter, the accent will appear after the letter, or as a "missing character" square.

This happens to me in Safari on my Mac when accented Cyrillic letters are italicized in Wikipedia, but it's specific to my chosen Lucida Grande font which doesn't contain italics; I think it falls back to a sans-serif italic font which doesn't support accented Cyrillics. Un-italicized accented Cyrillic displays fine for me.

If you have trouble, see if results are the same in a different web browser, such as Firefox or Opera, to determine if the problem is with your system's font rendering, or with the browser (MSIE/Windows has some Unicode bugs which don't affect Firefox or Safari/Mac). Michael Z. 2005-12-30 22:32 Z
