Ogemaw County Name

Named after Ogemaw-ki-keto, a prominent Saginaw Valley Indian chief who signed the Treaty of 1819. "Ogima" in Ottawa or Ojibwa is "chief" or "boss. That was the most specific of the four or five sources, and is from the Michigan History, Arts and letters website that is cited in the article. All the other sources say it is simply from the Ojibwe word for "Chief" "Leader" or "Boss" That includes the Clarke Historical Library. Take a look at List of Michigan county name etymologies and all the sources that are cited in that article. Here are some of the sources from that article.

The other Wikipedia article List of Michigan counties doesn't have a meaning. Here's a book that says Ogemaw means "Chief" in the Ojibwe language: http://books.google.com/books?id=T5d5wS7so14C&pg=PA87&dq=vogel+virgil+j++ogemaw&sig=NF2YArfQxsEWOg0b0Hi2Wb466fc Vogel, Virgil J. Indian Names in Michigan. (Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Press, 1986). 244 pgs. 8 B&W photographs & 3 maps. (1986) Template:ISBN. p. 87. It notes that it is a common name in Michigan, giving a great many geographic examples. In short, I can't find anything that suggests even remotely that Ogemaw is the name of an Indian tribe. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 22:56, 17 May 2008 (UTC) StanReply
