Popular culture- "Ground Zero" documentary ~ 1979-80?
I vaguely remember Offut/Omaha being the subject of a hypothetical nuclear attack in a documentary on one of the networks. I think it was called "The Defense of the United States" and the episode was titled "Ground Zero". Does anyone have add'l info on this? 38.104.120.214 (talk) 16:05, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Looking Glass
"Operation Looking Glass carried out its mission without any mishaps or incidents during its 29+ years of existence." This is not true. I was stationed at Offutt 1966-1969. - There was a crash on takeoff during this period: On 17 July 1967, USAF KC-135R, 59-1465, stalled and crashed at Offutt Air Force Base after the pilot overrotated the aircraft during takeoff, killing one of five on board.[62] [1] I suspect the citation may be from our own KC-135 article. Base closing?
A recent addition says there is a threat of closing the base unless the Nebraska senator sides with Obama on a vote. Unfortunately the links are conservative blogs and the source is an unnamed senate aide. Closing this base would be a huge a deal, I would feel a lot better if we had a reliable mainstream source for it. Otherwise it should be removed. Americasroof (talk) 21:51, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- Why do you care about the political orientation of the source? The issue is the blog status — they're not reliable at any rate — but given the political orientation of mainstream media, there's no reason to complain about this source's political orientation and not others. - Hmm, the Omaha World-Herald quotes Nelson to say that these are only rumors, and that there's no truth to them. Thus the problem with the blog idea in general. There's no reason to bother with mentioning false rumors, so I'll just remove the section. Nyttend (talk) 00:19, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for digging in. I have used "conservative" sources in other articles where the claim can be corroborated. My problem was that the article source was questionable (an unnamed aide) for such a major story. I would never have believed such a major event unless it appeared in the Omaha World-Herald. Further aggravating this was that it cited not the original claim (Michelle Malkin) but rather echoing blogs.
