Monte Vidi

The etymology section explains when "Montevidi" was first (purportedly) used, but not what "Vidi" meant. Does it mean "hat"? Or "I saw"? Or somebody's name? Or something else? Or maybe nobody knows now what it was supposed to mean in 1520? If it means "I saw" or similar then the list should be rearranged thus:

  • "I saw a mount"
    • Monte vide eu
    • Monte vidi
  • Monte VI De Este a Oeste
  • Monte Ovidio

Of course 'vidi' is Latin for 'I saw', the first person past tense of 'videre', 'to see'. So 'monte vidi' is very close to 'montem vidi' or 'I saw the mountain' in Latin.
But, since the first person present tense is 'video', there is an even better explanation of 'Montevideo', namely 'Montem video' or "I see the mountain' in Latin, as suggested by Carlos Cravieso in 1923[1].
