Stuff

I just noticed information from previous versions--deleted by accident?

  • does Margolyes hold an OBE?
  • did she do voice over work on Mulan?

Quill 23:27, 16 Oct 2004 (UTC)

According to IMDB, she does hold an OBE and she work on Mulan (as the voice of "Matchmaker")

Blackadder role

In Blackadder (the second series) she didn't play a Spanish Infanta, but Blackadder's puritan aunt Lady Whiteadder. They went to see Blackadder in order to talk of his inheritance. They would only eat turnip and drink water. In one quote when offered a chair she declared, "You have chairs? Wicked child, chairs are an invention of Satan. In our house Nathanial (her husband) sits on a spike. I sit on Nathanial: two spikes would be an Extravagance."

More on Blackadder she did indeed play Lady Whiteadder in Blackadder II but also played the Spanish Infanta in Blackadder I —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.152.174.65 (talk) 08:00, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removal of 'Sexy Sonia: Leaves from My School Girl Notebook '

The following was included in her Filmography:

Sexy Sonia: Leaves from My School Girl Notebook (197x) - Sexy Sonia, voice characterisation

This could very well be genuine but I can't find a refrence to this film in Google and it's not on Wikipedia. We also don't know the year? I've removed it but if someone could provide a source then it will be reincluded. C.harrison1988 (talk) 12:44, 15 May 2008 (UTC) Interview with Richard Glover, ABC Radio, Sydney, Australia, February 6, 2012, confirmed this role.Reply

If anyone's keen to look it up, she talked about it on Andrew Denton's More than Enough Rope on Monday 2 June 2008 in Australia on ABC1, which itself was compiled from an interview in an earlier show. 59.167.58.132 (talk) 12:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)DaveReply

She also discussed it on Desert Island Discs this morning, but called it "..Diary" not "..Notebook", so I have added it back.Sah10406 (talk) 10:42, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rating

I've rated this article as a C class for the LGBT project, nearly at B. Seems to cover the important points, and it well organised. Needs to fill in some of the gaps in citations. The discussion of her work seems to be a little random (or recentism?) - are they her "best" roles? "most aclaimed" "most famous"? Some quotes or cites from critics might clear it up. Is the OBE true? I couldn't see it in the article (was for services to arts? charity?. does she have an interaction with the gay community (publications, charities, views, fans?)Yobmod (talk) 08:27, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actor/actress

In all the interviews I've heard, she describes herself as an actor rather than an actress: unless there's a WP convention precluding it, I propose the article be altered to reflect this Dom Kaos (talk) 21:22, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

No objections, so I'm going to be bold ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 14:35, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

TV/Films

These are all mixed together in the Filmography section. I can split them into separate section if no-one objects.  Tigerboy1966  19:07, 8 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Cadbury’s Caramel Rabbit

The article vaguely says in the middle of credits for the 1990’s that “around this time” she voiced the Caramel Rabbit; she may have done, but that misses the fact that she’s played the role since the Eighties (according to the Wikipedia article on the chocolate bar),and a YouTube search found an advert with her voice from 1980. The citation article given doesn’t refer to the rabbit at all… Jock123 (talk) 15:40, 12 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Drug smugglers

More stuff - her house was (unbeknownst to her) abused by drug smugglers to helicopter drugs across the Channel. Someone decide if it's notable. TGCP (talk) 13:30, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I saw her recount this on The Graham Norton Show and I think it is notable. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:36, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nationality

From WP:CONTEXTBIO: "The opening paragraph should usually provide context for the activities that made the person notable. In most modern-day cases this will be the country of which the person is a citizen, national or permanent resident". Margolyes is a citizen and part-time resident in Australia so "Australia" should be included in her nationality. Any thoughts? Burrobert (talk) 12:41, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Monkey

Where is the evidence of her doing 'most of the supporting female roles in Monkey?' I live in Australia and never heard her voice - so what did she do? The Wikipedia page doesn't say what she did either, and if Tripitaka is credited to another female role, then she did bit parts and should state that (in the UK version). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.64.73 (talkcontribs) 11:38, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Indeed that claim (along with "She also worked with the theatre company Gay Sweatshop and provided voiceovers in the Japanese TV series The Water Margin (credited as Mirium Margolyes")) has no supporting source(s). I see she is listed at the Monkey (TV series) article as one the UK dub actors, but again with no source(s). Unless it can be sourced here it should be removed, or at least tagged as unsourced. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:51, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

B Class?

Seriously? The whole career section is a series of one-line paragraphs: in 2014 she did X, in 2015 she appeared in Y, in 2017 she did Z. This all needs to be rendered in reasonable prose, in a series of themed para.s KJP1 (talk) 01:37, 2 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Nationality redux

What is her nationality and why are so many edits to her bio related to this issue? As mentioned in one of my edits, policy says to use the word "and" in the case of dual citizenship. See the Arnold Schwarzenegger example under "Nationality examples" at Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Biography#Context. The question then is what are the two parts that should be joined by "and". We know that one of them is "Australian". What is the other one? Burrobert (talk) 06:56, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Here is a footnote from the policy mentioned above:
There is no categorical preference between describing a person as British rather than as English, Scottish, or Welsh. Decisions on which label to use should be determined through discussions and consensus. The label must not be changed arbitrarily. To come to a consensus, editors should consider how reliable sources refer to the subject, particularly UK reliable sources, and whether the subject has a preferred nationality by which they identify. Burrobert (talk) 06:59, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
My issue is with mixing ethnic identity (English) and nationality in the same sentence, hence my restructuring of the sentence for clarification. She only took on Australian citizenship late in life and has only been a part-time resident, and it can hardly be described as part of her identity. Very little of her career has been in Australia either, unlike the examples given such as Schwarzenegger or Lorre. Any other nationality is much simpler because they don't include separate countries and identities, as the UK does. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 07:51, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
p.s. Having said that, I'm happy to leave the English out completely rather than have it confuse the issue. Her ethnicity is mixed through parentage, although she is culturally English. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 07:55, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I can't comment on the notion of "ethnic identity" as it applies to the British Isles. The except from policy above seems to treat "English" as a nationality. I consider that the description should either be "English and Australian" or "British and Australian" depending on how reliable sources describe her. Either one is fine with me. Her connection to Australia over around 30 years is fairly clear from her film, television and stage appearances. The BLP noticeboard may be a good place at which to ask for more opinions. Burrobert (talk) 13:00, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Or perhaps "national identity" is a better term, considering that there are so many ethnicities within each. English is not a nationality in the sense that there is no English citizenship. The UK is the political entity that issues passports, etc.; however, many English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish people identify strongly with their national identity as such.
I'm not seeing much Australian in her filmography, and most British/English people would hardly be aware of her Australian citizenship, as in this recent Vogue article and here. In this 2020 article she says "We are very keen to come to Australia. But I don’t know if I would actually fully emigrate...". Her partner is Australian but lives in Amsterdam. Upon receiving citizenship here, "she said she had been visiting Down Under for decades and had always loved the place".
However, I'm happy to defer to majority opinion re interpretation of these wiki guidelines, so by all means ask at the BLP noticeboard. We also need to consider note a) on that page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 08:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Water Margin

I see that a citation is needed for Margolyes' role in the Japanese TV show of the Chinese novel "The Water Margin." I'm not sure it's allowed--and if it is, how to do it--but I can upload screenshots of the show's English title screen and the credits at the end that show her name. Is that citation enough?

Advice most welcome.

ken. Mesmer8 (talk) 10:03, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Video screenshots of images of actors are sometimes uploaded under fair use rationale. As this one would be used purely as a reference source and not displayed in any article, I don't see how there would be any copyright problem. If the film/ video itself is available online, at a copyright compliant source, an alternative might be to simply link to that, with a note directing readers to the closing credits? Filmography

The recent huge addition to the "Filmography" section is wholly unsourced. Should it be removed? Even if it gets sources, should it be moved to its own "Filmography of Miriam Margolyes article? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:09, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

She has been very prolific. I can't find a policy on this. There is a policy on presentation of filmographies at MOS:FILMOGRAPHY and WP:FILMOGRAPHY. It seems lists are preferred for a small number of items and tables for longer lists. There is also a project at WP:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers which may be able to provide advice. I had a look at pages for Vanessa Redgrave, Oliver Reed and Charlotte Rampling. Both Rampling and Redgrave's bios had a Selected filmography section. There were no sources provided for the films in the section, however all films listed had their own Wiki-pages. Reed's Filmography section was empty other than a link to his separate filmography article. Rampling and Redgrave also had their own Filmography articles. Assuming then that it is a matter of taste and editorial discretion, I would include a limited filmography section containing films and television appearances which have their own articles, and possibly not all of those. The choice of films/shows to list there could be discussed here if there was a dispute. Given the amount of work in Miriam's CV, I think a separate Filmography article is needed and should include all appearances. Burrobert (talk) 15:46, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately it's not just a "matter of taste and editorial discretion". Experience suggests that if and when Margolyes were to die (not for many years, I hope) any unsourced entry in the Filmography section would prevent her name appearing at WP:ITN/RD. This restriction has been the reason for a number of dedicated stand-alone "Filmography" articles being created, over recent years, for deceased actors. But, I agree, asking at WP:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers might be a good idea. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:01, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
