Can anyone clarify the spelling of this guy's name? An internet search indicates some ambiguity between 'Mathew' and 'Matthew'—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ziggurat (talk • contribs) 03:14, 22 September 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I have concluded that the correct spelling is with a single "t", even though there are several high quality references using the double "t" spelling.[1] [2]"[3] BATHE, B.W. : G.B. RUBEN DE CERVIN.: E. TAILLEMITE The Great Age of Sail. Edita Lausanne. 1967. Page 44 refers to the drawing by Matthew Baker. The single "t" spelling is authenticated by Stephen Johnston because it is the spelling used by Baker himself and the spelling used in his will. The shift to the double "t" spelling must have been to correct it to the current spelling. Tvbanfield 15:39, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Please bear in mind we're talking about the 16th Century. Shakespeare was capable of signing his name with different spellings twice on the same document, so we can accept that Mathew (Matthew) Baker would have used both forms, and probably others as well. Shem (talk) 21:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
