how to edit
Wondering how to edit this U.S. County Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.
Oops, I forgot to summarize edits of July 30:
- The county seat is Leland Township, as verified by "Campbell's List" and the external link to Leelanau County's official website. Also on that website is an overview of the new county government facility proposed for Suttons Bay Township. Voters decide Aug. 5.
- A small portion of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore extends south into Benzie County.

Cities, villages, and townships
Not included on this list is the City of Traverse City (seat of neighboring Grand Traverse County). A small portion of the city extends north into Leelanau County, infringing on Elmwood Township. How to fix? T Garth 04:04, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Lake Leelanau
This is a natural lake. It is not formed by the dam on the Leland River, though the dam does influence the lake's level.
Pronunciation
I've restored the pronunciation aid because I see no evidence that there is not a consensus on pronunciation. I'm from about a hundred miles away from Leelanau County, and I've never heard anyone say "-oh" /oʊ/ rather than "-aw" /ɔ/. I've also found a number of sources just from a quick search that say "-aw". For example, Traverse City Cherry Festival 2014 at 2:15. Michael Norton, the media relations manager of Traverse City Tourism, uses "aw". And Drunk driver arrested for hitting young boy and leaving scene at 1:13. A news reporter in Traverse City uses "aw". Also, Under the Radar! - Michigan - Michigan's Leelanau Peninsula at 4:13. A local restaurant owner in Benzie County, which is directly south of Leelanau County, uses "aw", and the host of the show (who appears to be from Detroit, and clearly has an Inland North accent) uses "aw" as well.
