On the term

I posit that the name “Iraqi Kurdistan” and “Southern Kurdistan” are both unofficial terms, in the sense that they are not used by any authority on geography internationally nor are they mentioned in the Iraqi Constitution as designations for a part of Iraq, and as such, it should be made clear that they are both unofficial. Also, the context in which these terms are used should also be specified, and that is, the context of Kurdish nationalism. Montblamc1 (talk) 11:40, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

An easy Google search or JSTOR search shows that "Iraqi Kurdistan" is not used by Kurdish nationalists but in academic studies. Could you explain how all these sources are related to nationalist Kurds? Sikorki (talk) 12:28, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

These developments include:

1. Post 2017 actions taken by the Baghdad against KRI, particularly the erosion of autonomy. The source I have cited (Washington Institute) mentions: “These rulings come as the latest in a series of developments reshaping the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad since the 2017 Kurdish independence referendum signalled a turning point for KRG autonomy. Since this failed bid at complete independence from Baghdad, there has been a gradual but consistent erosion of self-governance in the KRI.”

2. Some Kurdish officials describing these developments as Centralisation: the source (Rudaw) mentions “The KDP’s politburo said that the court ruling was a continuation of its “unconstitutional rulings against the Kurdistan Region in the past four years” and an attempt to “return Iraq to a centralized system.””

3. Masrour Barzani imploring the United States to intervene, the source mentions: ““I write to you now at another critical juncture in our history, one that I fear we may have difficulty overcoming. …[W]e are bleeding economically and hemorrhaging politically. For the first time in my tenure as prime minister, I hold grave concerns that this dishonorable campaign against us may cause the collapse of … the very model of a Federal Iraq that the United States sponsored in 2003 and purported to stand by since.” Montblamc1 (talk) 16:43, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Description of Iraqi Kurdistan and KRI

Describing the whole area of Iraqi Kurdistan as the “Kurdish region” is premature and inaccurate since not all of Iraqi Kurdistan today is yet part of the Kurdish region, or KRI. The implementation of Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution will eventually define whether these parts will become part of the Kurdish region (KRI) and since it has not yet been implemented, one should not describe it as the “Kurdish region”. “Kurdish-inhabited region” is more accurate. Cia.gov describes KRI as semi-autonomous. It is a federal region per the constitution, and describing a region or an administrative division as an “entity” is obviously wrong. KR is commonly described as a "semi-autonomous entity" by literature like [1][2] so I don't see a problem with the term. Semsûrî (talk) 17:27, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
