Suggestions

I think that this page accurately described the history of Illustration, specialized areas of illustration, and the many forms that illustrations are utilized. I think that the article would be more resourceful if it mentioned the many mediums that can be used in what is considered an illustration. A illustration can be composed of multiple mediums and those should be specifically listed. For example, a watercolor painting that is detailed with marker or pen is not just a painting, but an illustration. Defining that an illustration can be a combination of mediums can help researchers or aspiring illustrations understand what an illustration can be. MaddyJanacua's suggestion is good, but as illustration can use almost any medium, I suggest scope would be too wide. A better place to discuss medium in detail would be in articles on specialist areas, many of which are linked from this page. MaryHutchison (talk) 13:52, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

This article ought to be connected to Drawing (possibly as a synonym) and Illustrator. The current topic of this article would be more appropriate for Information graphics. Sbwoodside 23:21, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Definitely not a synonym. Drawing may be a technique used in illustration, but they are not the same. Other media used in illustration include photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture, collage, etc.

Illustration intersects with the field of Information graphics, but it does not wholly fit in that field. Or it might be argued that Info graphics is a subset of Illustration.

In turn, IIllustration is a subset of Visual Communication, as should be Graphic Design.

spam

Removed all the spam links-- which was all the internet links. Not one was encyclopedic. Cheers, :) Dlohcierekim 21:33, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Related Links

I don't see value in retaining any of those links. They do not appear as authoritative to the field of illustration. There are professional organizations such as the Society of Illustrators which may be appropriate. Recommend deleting all as linkspam Rezimmerman (talk) 20:27, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Art schools

Many, many art schools in the world offer illustration. Do we need a list of those that do? An IP user has twice added two schools that do offer illustration but I feel this is not needed as it would mean listing every other art school. Plus it amounts to little more than adverts for those schools. She'sGotSpies (talk) 21:06, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Insurance

"Illustration" is also a word used in insurance, it describes a computer-calculated prevision of profits. Should be a different article Illustration (insurance). Nicolas1981 (talk) 08:37, 3 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Only 2d illustrations

When you read the depiction link in the first sentence, it implies that 3D rendering is not a form of illustration. Is this intended? Oicumayberight (talk) 22:10, 7 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Childrens books

I think we have way too many examples of early 20th c/late 19th c childrens literature illustrations. i love them, and i am creating a gallery of them at the commons, but "illustration" is a whole lot more than that.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:35, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please add all Piero Ventura's artwork in HD

Many of his books are not printed today. Upload all his work in HD, and if there is a split photo, correct it with Photoshop. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:587:410F:6200:C8DD:F971:F636:AB2F (talk) 02:57, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Mad scientist

A cartoon drawing of a mad scientist (July 2003)

I removed this illustration of a mad scientist from the "Technical and scientific illustration" section because it didn't seem on-topic. Any objections? PrinceTortoise (he/himpoke) 20:20, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
