Expansion of article

Hello to any visitors that may stumble upon this page. As you can tell, this article is a work-in-progess. It grew organically out of the History section of the University of Alabama and was transferred to a new page when it grew to be too large.

This article can be expanded upon a great deal, but I don't want to become way too bloated, so I can't specify an upper limit of detail and breadth. Also, free free to make any grammatical or rhetorical changes to the article.
