here's a fascinating article about the history of HNC, HND, ONC, and ONDs in the UK... I didn't know they went back to 1922! http://www.technicaleducationmatters.org/publications/historyexams/chapter4 [[139.166.230.63 (talk) 18:03, 8 November 2012 (UTC)macdaddy]]Reply

--- I want to know whether the HND can be used as a enitial to put next to your name. Some BTEC qualifications allow this.

Yep - at the end of your name - basically anything above a high school diploma can be used as such - once their is a tradition or custom. Djegan 21:48, 30 September 2005 (UTC)WHY???Reply
So, in the UK any qualification above AVCE or an A-level can be put as an enitial next to the qualifiers name?
It depends on the particulars of each qualification but certainly HNC, HND and Fd are post-nominal letters - on a fundemental level it is a matter of custom and tradition and any awards body could give the specifics of what is accepted. Djegan 09:56, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply
I find this very interesting, thanks for your help. I will be back and forth here now and again.

grading

Just want to know, like with most courses when you get an overall grade, do you get an overall grade with the HND?

    • The HND does not contain an overall grade, if you enter a degree with a HND, the entry would go by all the individual modules passed on your final year. If you get Merits all around on a final year of the HND you will be able to do a second year of a degree. Amlder20 16:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

HND

You do not need a HNC to study the HND, the HNC is actually the HND but part timed.

-They are not the same, the HND contains different modules, I'm on a part time HNC at the moment (taking 1 and 1/2 years) and then the HND will take a further 1 and 1/2 years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.12.81.68 (talk) 10:52, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pointless

Should it be noted that they are completely pointless ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.13.223.120 (talk) 11:46, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Further Education or Higher Education

This article states that a Higher National Diploma is a further education qualification whereas the HND disambiguation page says that it is a higher education qualification - which is it?
BobKilcoyne (talk) 07:44, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

It used to be a higher education qualification when it was awarded by higher education institutions (universities and polytechnics) but it is now taught by further education colleges so I guess it is more appropriately seen as a further education qualification. With the expansion of university students (500% growth since 1992), the people who used to study HNDs in the UK, now study degrees. FreeFlow99 (talk) 14:11, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

What happened to HND students when polytechnics transitioned into universities and stopped teaching HNDs?

When polytechnics ceased offering HND courses, but expanded their student intake for degrees, were the HND courses morphed into degree courses so that students could seamlessly transition? Or were HND diplomats offered and extra year to gain a degree? Or did they merely leave after 2 years with an HND? This is interesting as it informs understanding on the perceived difference between degree and HND students. FreeFlow99 (talk) 14:17, 9 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
