She changed her name to "Modjeski" and that is the name that she and her son Ralph are best-known by. Nobody outside of Polish circles calls them "Modrzejewska", from what I can see. Shouldn't the main article be under "Modjeski?" Willmcw 02:16, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Should this article be listed under Helena Modrzejewska or as it is now, Modjeska? I think it should be under Modrzejewska, since this is her original Polish last name, not some simplified American version.

I disagree. The subject changed her name. We list other people who gain famed outside of Poland under their profesional names, not their orginal names (or married names, as in this case). See Pola Negri, Leopold Stokowski, Billy Wilder. "Madame Modjeska" is the name by which she is most famous in the English-speaking world, and this is the English-language version. -Will Beback 08:55, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Modjeska did change her name. She was known as Helena Modrzejewska in Poland, which was not her real neame either. The Manager of the California Theater in San Francisco California where she made her American acting debut August 20th 1877 told Mme. Modrzejewska her name would be to hard for Americans to pronounce and suggested she change it or shorten it. Break this into two sentences, and fix the "but" issue.

"She was initially successful on the Polish stage, but after emigrating to the United States, and despite her poor command of English, she succeeded on stage in America and London."

The word "but" in there reads like "conversely [...]" It'd work if you were about to say that she WASN'T successful overseas. I suggest changing the above sentence to the following:

"She was initially successful on the Polish stage.
