A subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic languages whose members are found in North Africa.

The language of Ancient Egypt, probably the first to be written down, is also a member of this subfamily. Egyptian hieroglyphic inscriptions dating back to around 4000 BC have been found.

This article needs to be rewritten emphasizing that the term is no longer in use and why.

Please do so. I'd love to know why this term is now considered to be of historic interest only. -- Derek Ross
