Note: in the second proposal above, "Georgia (U. S. state)" has been changed to "Georgia (U.S. state)" because the former is a redirect. Redirects are ineligible to be current titles in move requests. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 16:04, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose as neither is a common name, and "state of Georgia" can just as easily refer to the sovereign state as to the US one. Largoplazo (talk) 12:40, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oppose per above replies, common name for both the country and the U.S. state is "Georgia". jamacfarlane (talk) 14:10, 10 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose; Georgia isn't called the Republic of Georgia. Not anymore, at least.
    Did I mention Eritrea? Eritrea.
This seemed obvious for Georgia at first. But not the Eurasian Georgia, the American one. For a few seconds.
But oops. Guess that was the wrong idea. It may be the official name, but something tells me this wi.. hold on why is it "(U.S. state)" and not "(United States)" or "(U.S.A.)"? There's probably some policy I'm missing here with that.
Now then, the Georgia that became independent from the Russian Empire, became a protectorate, un-became a protectorate, got occupied by the UK, got invaded and occupied again by another Russia (this time the USSR), and then declared independence again, and then fell into civil war for the next two years, and then had roughly 16% of it's territory rebel and jump ship inside of said civil war, and then that 16% turned into a 20% thanks to an outside power later on in it's life? Yeah, that Georgia. Even more opposed. Within that lifespan, the Republic of Georgia died and was replaced with just Georgia.

Republic of Georgia

Isn't that the official name? Why isn't it listed? Dr. Precursor (talk) 23:03, 25 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

We use common names so it's easy for our readers to find. United States vs United States of America Moxy🍁 23:09, 25 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
The answer to your first question is No. Largoplazo (talk) 10:15, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Is Georgia not a republic? Dr. Precursor (talk) 14:19, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
According to the constitution, the country is called Georgia. Prior to the adoption of the constitution in 1995 the official name was indeed "Republic of Georgia". This is explained in the article, with reference to article 2.1 of the constitution. These are periodically recurring questions. The weakness of archiving here. Labrang (talk) 17:49, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
And yes, it is a republic, but no, as said, it is not officially called "Republic of Georgia". Labrang (talk) 17:50, 26 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Labrang, perhaps add your explanation to the nutshell FAQ? CMD (talk) 06:23, 27 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Where in the yellow section above (assuming you mean that) it would be most suitable? Labrang (talk) 20:56, 27 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think deeper than adding a fourth bullet point. "It is sometimes thought that the official name of this country is "Republic of Georgia". Prior to the..." CMD (talk) 06:14, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
I did not know that. I knew it was a republic but i thought the official name was Republic of Georgia. I wanted to edit that in but didnt because I didn't know if consensus was reached of whether or not to do that. Dr. Precursor (talk) 04:46, 28 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

Change government title to “Dominant party unitary parliamentary republic” due to current events.

Due to current events, including the opposition refusing their mandates, and the ruling Georgian Dream threatening to ban the main opposition, I believe that we should change the name to a dominant party democracy. CukormentesKenyer (talk) 19:45, 28 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Semi-protected edit request on 9 June 2025

Script error: No such module "protected edit request". It is said in the article that "Georgia is a country in West Asia and Eastern Europe." Change that sentence to the following: "Georgia is a country in Eastern Europe and West Asia. However, it is considered culturally, historically, and politically part of Europe." The latest sentence is how Georgia is described in the article about Georgia in the French Wikipedia. As a Georgian myself, I believe that definition represents us the best way. You can use the references for this sentence from the French Wikipedia article about Georgia, references 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. 188.169.133.158 (talk) 14:13, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Georgia's Continental Classification

The article currently states, "Georgia is a country in West Asia and Eastern Europe." I suggest revising this to: "Georgia is a country in Eastern Europe and West Asia. However, it is considered culturally, historically, and politically part of Europe." This phrasing aligns with how Georgia is described in the French Wikipedia article on Georgia. As a Georgian, I believe this definition best represents our national identity. You may support this revision using references 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 from the French Wikipedia article. Stevg08 (talk) 18:05, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

The cultural part, at least, is unsuitable in the lead for the same reason it wouldn't be suitable in the lead for Australia, which is also culturally European. All we're doing here is identifying where the country is—which is, in part, Europe, so the "however" is inappropriate. The impression the sentence gives me is that, having said that Georgia is partly in Asia, Wikipedia is horrified that some readers will come away with the sense that its people (who we haven't even begun talking about yet) are (gasp) Asian, and we must dispel that notion right away.
The lead already goes on to set forth the country's European political connections. Largoplazo (talk) 19:07, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
First of all, thank you for responding.
Okay, I understand all of this, but I just think it’s important to state that Georgia identifies as part of Europe, even though it is also geographically part of Asia. Of course, the border between Europe and Asia is unclear and debatable, especially in the Caucasus region.
I just love the definition in the French article because it classifies the country in the best way possible.
I understand that we shouldn’t include the cultural definition in the article, especially at the beginning.
However, I believe we can still do a bit more to reflect how the Georgian nation identifies. People here are fighting to become a proper member of the Western family — just take a look at the pro-EU protests in Tbilisi.
So, my suggestion is that we phrase it this way: “Georgia is a country in Eastern Europe and West Asia”, if we don't wish to elaborate further. This would be a more balanced expression. As I mentioned earlier, the boundary between the two continents is debatable. While, according to the most widely used definition, the larger part of Georgia is in Asia, it would be more accurate and respectful to write it this way due to how the population identifies — and also because of those factors we don’t want to mention at the start of the article (such as culture, politics, history, ethnography, etc.).
Just to avoid any misunderstanding: this has nothing to do with any negative view of Asia. Asia is a continent with an incredible culture, history, achievements, literature, and more. We Georgians are proud of the Asian elements in our culture, and of Georgia also being part of Asia. But we, as a nation, identify as European — that’s all I wanted to say. Stevg08 (talk) 20:08, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Well, again, in my opinion the purpose in the lead sentences is to show where this physical mass of land is, which is independent of how its population identifies. That can be saved for later where the culture is discussed. As for whether it says "West Asia and Eastern Europe" or "Eastern Europe and West Asia", it matters not one bit to me, but they are equally accurate and neither is less or more respectful than the other, no more than "For the banquet they're giving us a choice between chicken and salmon" is either less or more respectful than "For the banquet they're giving us a choice between salmon and chicken".
At this point I'll stand back and see what others say. Anyone who participates here ought to check the archives of this talk page to see if it's been discussed before—I didn't see it in a quick scan—but also see similar discussions that have been held at Talk:Armenia. Largoplazo (talk) 22:18, 9 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
It's a bit clunky, we should start with the specific location (Caucasus) before zooming out (vague continental boundaries), but otherwise the precise order seems not important. CMD (talk) 01:24, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I just found out what the beginning of this article looked like some time ago. What are your thoughts on it?
Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region on the coast of the Black Sea. Sometimes considered a transcontinental country, it is located at the intersection of Eastern Europe and West Asia, and is today generally regarded as part of Europe. It is bordered to the north and northeast by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan.
This version of the introduction is more productive for the reader. It presents Georgia’s geographical and geopolitical context clearly and concisely from the outset. It gives essential information about the country’s location, regional classification, and bordering nations without overwhelming the reader.
As a result, it’s easier for a general audience to quickly understand where Georgia is and why it matters. Stevg08 (talk) 07:45, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
No to "Sometimes considered a transcontinental country". The only purpose this serves is to show off that somebody knows a big word (and incorrectly, in my opinion—"transcontinental" means across a continent, not in multiple continents). It's like writing "Poland, a unicontinental country, is located in Europe." Largoplazo (talk) 11:53, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry; I changed it just because more sources say that it is in Asia, and fewer Europe, as stated in my edit summary. As a new (I joined 1 year ago, but I only started editing Wikipedia pages 1-2 weeks ago) Wikipedia-editor with only a few edits, I never knew that just a simple swap could cause this problem. I also changed the short description for consistency (see Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkey). If you want to, I can change them back. Next time, I will make a post on the Talk page before editing. For something similar, I also changed the description of Iran to "country in West Asia" from "...Western Asia" for consistency with Armenia, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Kuwait, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen; again, this is also stated in my edit summary. If it wasn't obvious, I was not trying to damage Wikipedia. KoroRush (talk) 12:12, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and I only made this edit yesterday. KoroRush (talk) 12:15, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Can I get banned from this? I really didn't mean to hurt the country's national identity. KoroRush (talk) 12:23, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I propose that we use this beginning for the article.
Georgia is a country in the Caucasus region on the coast of the Black Sea. The country is located at the intersection of Eastern Europe and West Asia, and is today generally regarded as part of Europe. It is bordered to the north and northeast by Russia, to the south by Turkey and Armenia, and to the southeast by Azerbaijan.
If this text still doesn't meet your requirements, please revert the article to its previous version. Thank you. Stevg08 (talk) 12:50, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I am fine with your suggestion. You can revert it yourself, because you made the suggestion. The previous version for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Georgia_(country)&action=edit&oldid=1294672021. If you want to keep the old style of the short description too, I recommend to change the short description from "Country in Caucasus; bridges Europe, Asia", to "Country in the Caucasus; between Europe and Asia" for improvement of wording, what do you think? KoroRush (talk) 13:17, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't exactly know why but for some reason I can't edit the article. Can you please do it for me? Stevg08 (talk) 13:18, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I have made the edit. KoroRush (talk) 13:33, 10 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
