Talk:Genetics of humans
Latest comment: 26 September 2005 by Daycd
The information currently on this page is most specifically related to genomics. All of the well-supported information is already in Human genome. There does need to be an article about the genetics of humans, which is a much broader topic, encompassing social and ethical as well as scientific issues. We should choose Human genetics or Genetics of humans to flesh this out. (unsignd by Mike Lin in Aug 2005)
- Human genetics seems a more appropriate term. i don't think that such an article would realy be the same as an article on the human genome. it should contain information on human diseases dealing with single loci diseases such as CF as well as mutlit loci traits such as heart disease. A compare and contrast type article. It would also be appropriate to discuss the consequences of having a pasrticlualr allele such as brac1 and the penetrance of such phenotypes. i.e. what are the chances that a carier will in fact get breast cancer. Twin studies could be discussed in this context. Mitochondrial myopathies would also be of interest with regard to late onset phenotypes and hteroplamy of the mitochondrial genotypes to each cell. Other late onset diseases such as the trinucleotide repeats and the severity of such disease being dependent on thenumber of trinucleotide repeats etc.
- Mosaicim could also be discussed. Rare somatic mutations and x-inactivation are of specific interest. In this vain X-linked traits would be of interest and how women can be genetic mosaics depending on which chromosome is ranndomly inactivated. Likewise Y linked traits and colour blindness would be a interesting example of some sex linked traits.
- The human genome article should focus on the contents and structure of the genome. Not the specific funstions of disease related genes. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth. Are we sure there is not a similar article already out there? David D. (Talk) 22:57, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
