Gallia County/Gallipolis

To be quite clear about the names: Both are in reference to the French people who settled the area in the late 1700’s. Gaul is the ancient name for lands in Europe that included present day FRANCE. That’s why the “motto” of the area, or the “nickname” is, “City of the Gauls.” From Latin, Gallia = “Gaul,” and Galli = “The Gauls.” From Greek, Polis = City.
