Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

"Fort Rucker" vs. "Fort Rucker, Alabama"

I want to move this article back to "Fort Rucker". (A) It's a military base, not a town. The state name isn't part of its name. (B) The article was moved by cut&paste, losing the edit history. Comments? —wwoods 16:10, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Redstone Arsenal is not Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. I don't see why Fort Rucker is Fort Rucker, Alabama. --Anivron 16:58, 2 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
The history of this article and many other "Fort" articles is that they began from an import of census place information which included the forts as a designated census place within each fort's respective state. If you look at the category Category:United States Army posts you'll see many other still listed with states just as Fort Rucker. Because the Census Bureau believes they are places as well as military installations, the current title is certainly correct from that viewpoint. However, you might bring up the discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history for a consistent representation of US military base titles. AUTiger ʃ talk/work 23:58, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Naming issue

Editors are reminded that this is a contentious topic area subjected to heightened editing standards and scrutiny, and that controversial page moves must be discussed and gain consensus, with arguments being made in accordance with our policies, guidelines, and MOS on article naming and titles -- not based on politics, or personal preferences. We've been through this on two separate base rename articles now, each where the page was repeatedly subjected to a move and edit war over the names that had not yet taken effect, nor that had any WP:COMMONNAME or MOS:AT support. We're not doing that a third time; I've placed all of these base names under extended-confirmed protection for a month. If you want to discuss a move or change the name, make a formal RM, make policy-based arguments, and gain consensus. Be prepared to cite evidence of the move *actually* taking place -- i.e. not an announcement that a move will happen in the future (i.e. the 6/10 announcement from President Trump), and not an order to a subordinate for them to execute the name change; but to a reliable source that directly states the change has been executed.SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 03:17, 12 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Per Army General Orders, this redesignation has taken effect; I've moved the page title and restored the copy (with minor copyedits) back to the Ft. Rucker version. SWATJester Shoot Blues, Tell VileRat! 04:27, 17 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
