The present article does not look too long but there could be more written about effects on his reputation and legacy. The 'Legacy' section is confined to the use of his name as a code word by Nasser to take over the Suez Canal but this surely reflected a legacy of resentment among Egyptians, who have erected a memorial to workers who died in the Canal's building. His reputation in France differed between the Suez Canal and Panama Canal projects. I have read a Time magazine article in the 1970s (when the Treaty handing Panama's to Panamanian ownership was proposed) that whereas de Lesseps was known as 'the Great Frenchmen' for the success of the Suez project, the high death rate of workers on his Panama Canal project led to him being satirised as 'The Great Undertaker'.Cloptonson (talk) 06:39, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Barthélemy and La Pérouse

I strongly question this claim. Our article on La Pérouse says his ship was lost with all hands. If this was not the case, why was Barthélemy de Lesseps never questioned about the fate of the voyage and the circumstances of his survival?
