Too much cross contamination. This needs to be splitted
Looks like we are talking about to different communities. Need to split this in to two parts one highlighting Thiyya and other Ezhava! 17.233.70.106 (talk) 13:10, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- In Malabar there are actually three different ethinic groups who come under the Thiyya name.
- One is the matrilineal Thiyyas of north Malabar. Traditionally they were mentioned as having some ancient Greek bloodline in them. And it is seen mentioned that this population had white skin colour.
- Second is the south Malabar patrilineal Thiyyas. They were said to have white skin complexion of an Asian variety. It is possible that this population adopted the Thiyya name. This was not welcomed by the north Malabar Thiyyas. In fact, there had been restritions on matrimonial alliance with the South Malabar Thiyyas. This is seen mentioned in Malabar Manual written by William Logan.
- The third population that has acquired the Thiyya name is the Ezhavas who entered into Malabar district (British - Malabar) during the erstwhile English rule in the location. They change their caste name to that of Thiyya, the moment they settle in Malabar. However, they do not belong to either the north Malabar or South Malabar population. The Ezhavas are traditionally of a dark skin colour. However, as of now, they do have a lot of Thiyya bloodline in them.
- North Malabar Thiyyas have a Shamanistic worship system. Muthappan is one of the deities of this system.
- What the South Malabar Thiyya worship system is not known to me.
- Ezhava worship system was connected to Madan and Marutha in Travancore kingdom.
- As of now, from around 1930 onward, all these three populations have converted into Hindu (traditional Brahmin) religon.
- During the English rule period, a number of marriaged seems to have taken place between north and south Malabar Thiyyas.
- As of now, from around 1980s onward, the Ezhavas have also married into many north and south Thiyya familes.
- However, it might be good on the part of Wikipedia to stop identifying the Thiyya ethnicity with that of the Ezhavas. And also, the distinction between the north and south Thiyya also needs to be placed on record,. 150.107.213.10 (talk) 10:10, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Caste is not formed on basis of genetics especially in south india. It's a social construct especially created by Brahmins on social standing. Basically created by centuries of infusion various communities. Historically Matrilineal system practiced among several ezhavas, there are fair skinned ezhavas and dark skinned thiyyas too. Lineage and traditions were used to change among both ezhavas/thiyyas depend upon location. If you claim a thiyya from north kerala is different from Ezhava from south Kerala. Such difference on appearance exist even among nairs and other communities. A nambiyar is very much different from a nair pillai. But both are considered same. Both these communities are nowadays maintaining matrimonial relations. And thiyyas was even a name refered by certain subsection of travancore ezhava. Even dr. Palpu was referred himself as a travancore thiyya. Clearly there was some sort of overlapping between these two communities in some regions especially from south malabar to northern central travancore area. Caste and clan is different. Clan is connected to lineage, it's not same it's treated as different manner even among nairs . But caste is created by brahmins on social standing existed back them. It's all about how they treated or considered others. They were treated as same by nambudiris. That's why nowadays it's considered as same. Culturally north travancore ezhavas were closer to thiyyas. Being ezhava from north travancore , I can confirm we don't worship madan or marutha here but yakshi worship is common among all hindus. Nowadays there's lots of intermarriages happening between thiyyas and ezhavas ( except TVM and kollam side). I don't think there's need of seperate page. But it's good to include more about customs of different sections of thiyyas. 2409:40F3:2E:308A:2C6C:C1FF:FE4E:953 (talk) 11:55, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
