Newspoll in results table

Is there any good reason why the results table since 1910 includes Newspoll polls from 1993 onwards? Timrollpickering (talk) 18:28, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Merger proposal

The result was no consensus for a merge. It is clear that Political groups (Australia) is a poorly maintained and referenced page. The consensus is that Electoral system of Australia is the better page. However, the discussion centred around improving the Political groups page prior to any future merge activity. I propose merging Political groups (Australia) into Electoral system of Australia. The source article is short, an orphan, poorly written, lacks citations, and, as of 2013, outdated. The pre-2013 process described in the source article is described more fully in the destination article, specifically Template:Alink.

@ClaudineChionh: thanks for the ping, but I don't know enough about the topic to form a view on the proposed merger.

However, I do see that both pages cover this issue with poorly-written text and indequate or no refs. So I suggest that before any merging is considered, both articles need the attention of an expert in the topic. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:38, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for raising this proposal. While I agree that much needs to be done with both articles, I don't think merging as such is the best approach. The purpose of Electoral system of Australia appears to be to give a broad overview of various features. Political groups however has an extremely narrow focus - it covers groups that are too small to form a micro party. In looking at the the article, I am not sure that there is anything worth saving - there has only been one substantial edit, which was the final contribution by that editor, back in 2013. The source listed (archived) is not a discussion of these minor groups, but merely an attempt to unravel where the preference flows for minor parties went. Between all of the groups listed, they got a total of 0.12% of the votes at the 2013 election. I had a short look for reliable sources but came up empty - there has been a lot written about preference harvesting, including the infamous NSW tablecloth ballot from 1999 (picture) but so far as I have been able to find that's about micro parties & these unnamed groups. I don't see how it meets any notability guideline. In short I am thinking political groups should be a redirect as alternative to deletion (WP:ATD-R). --Find bruce (talk) 05:17, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

The political groups page seems to be trying to make something substantial out of the fact that some of the candidates in elections don't have a party name on the ballot paper. The problem is such candidates can be anything from a small party that hasn't managed to get the name registered (the recent federal changes tripling the number of members required will potential push more candidacies into this position; some of the states have awkward hurdles and deadlines that impede new parties) to an independent campaigner who has found a family member or friend to help them meet the requirements for an above the line voting square. Ultimately political groups is probably best deleted as a confused synthesis. Articles on Group voting ticket, party registration and independents in Australia cover the basics.
