No, the title was not created in 1861. The first Earl of Cromartie was Sir George Mackenzie of Tarbat (1630-1714), 1st Viscount Tarbat, Lord of Session and subsequently Lord Justice-General and Clerk-Register of Scotland, Privy Councillor, Secretary of State for Scotland. He was created first Earl of Cromartie by Queen Anne in 1703. I don't have the required literature to hand which would allow me to rewrite the article incorporating the subsequent history of the title. Unfortunately, there is no entry for this Sir George Mackenzie in Wikipedia, and he should not be confused with his contemporary and fellow countryman Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh ("Bloody Mackenzie")(1636-1691) for whom there is an entry.Eilthireach 22:08, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There were two separate creations - one in 1703, one in 1861. This ought to be added. john k 22:55, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
