Civil parish

Durham will be a civil parish called "City of Durham" from 1 April 2018[1]. I'll wait until it comes through Mapit before adding it. Unparished area and the Commons category will need to be updated when this happens. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:02, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

Durham, England → Durham, County DurhamDurham, County Durham – Per WP:UKPLACE: Template:Tq, and the fact that "Durham, England" may refer to the county. Compare Boston, Lincolnshire or Reading, Berkshire. feminist (talk) 11:49, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

• Neutral The county is usually called "County Durham" but the county is officially "Durham". I moved the Commons category to "Durham, County Durham" from "City of Durham, England" which I thought was unsuitable natural disambiguation. However the county is a subsidiary meaning of the city (it is named after it) just like Bury, Greater Manchester and Metropolitan Borough of Bury. If we follow WP:COMMONAME for the county then we have a situation similar to Lincoln, England, in response to Boston, and by that logic we could use Durham, Durham, which would be a bad location. An alternative might be to add some content to the city article per WP:DABCONCEPT and possibly move to just Durham but that may well create too much problems with Durham, North Carolina. I do however Weak oppose to using Durham City as I don't think that's common enough for WP:NATURALDIS. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:59, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

  While I understand the difference and that hatnotes should help, for me that will never be an OK scenario. A reader not from those places, wouldn't know how the local naming system works, they'll just know that there is a river called Welland and write either style expecting to get to the right one. The "small difference" guideline is just not reader-friendly and is strictly working for the database. --Gonnym (talk) 07:07, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

  Those looking for the English county will probably search for County Durham and those looking for the American one will use Durham County. I'd point out that Berkshire County doesn't go to Berkshire and Ohio State doesn't go to Ohio. Readers are more likely to have problems when both come up in the search suggestions such as Red meat and Red Meat. My point was just as a minor consideration for those that know Durham, NC is in Durham County could confuse the English city when presented with "Durham, County Durham". • opppose. The current name is more compact and natural. Durham, County Durham just seems clumsy and potentially confusing. County Durham does throw up such problems; it’s formally named Durham itself, so "Durham, Durham" would be correct but even more confusing. • Comment The use of "Durham, Durham" could also conflict with other Durhams that are also in a diversion called Durham. Not to mention that other places in County Durham like Copley, County Durham which could be at just Copley, Durham and even Killerby, County Durham which isn't even in the district. However I don't think anyone is supporting "Durham, Durham" anyway. In addition Durham (city) would conflict with the other cities. I agree with John that the current title is probably the best. How it’s pronounced

I would have thought with local northern England English it would be pronounced Template:IPAc-en. I would say if so it should be like Newcastle upon Tyne’s, RP (the current Template:IPAc-en) and local way of pronouncing the city’s name. Chocolateediter (talk) 21:47, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
