Aimee Semple McPherson suggested addition

Any objections to adding the following paragraph after the Arizona Copper Mine Strike of 1983 sentence? The incident was famous in its time and its impact on Douglas mention by several of McPherson's biographers and in numerous national newspapers.

Suggested addition

On June 23, 1926 Aimee Semple McPherson was found collapsed near a road at the adjacent Mexican town of Agua Prieta, Sonora . She was driven into Douglas and told a story of kidnap, torture and escape as she convalesced at Calumet Hospital. There, people swarmed about, anxious to see the famous Canadian-American evangelist including city officials, police officers reporters and preachers. Because of the onslaught of photographers and reporters in the hospital, she later moved a hotel to avoid disturbing its patients. For a period of several weeks, Douglas enjoyed a brisk tourist boom as police, reporters and others visited the town and the nearby desert to investigate her story. The Los Angeles Times wrote "Mrs. McPherson put Douglas square on the map and the citizens here appear grateful that it was in Douglas she sought refuge." (ref Kendal, Read, Staff Correspondent; Los Angeles Times; (June 23 1926) pp 1,2,4 ref ref Lately, Thomas The Vanishing Evangelist: the Aimee Semple McPherson Kidnapping Affair (Viking Press, 1959) p.60 ref)

Other information about the incident (but I did not plan adding to this story ) --From its residents, she she received gifts, including flowers and clothing. --When she left by train to return to Los Angeles, 2000 persons were there to see her off. --After she got back to Los Angeles, as publicity and accompanying doubt developed around her story, Mayor A E Hinton of Douglas Arizona, (Together with undersigned residents) later signed a document indicating there has been no iota of proof adduced here in Douglas that would in any way attempt to disapprove any of the statements made by Mrs. McPherson regarding her reappearance. I am not sure that a photograph of a hotel lobby does justice to this article. Surely someone has something more apposite? Shipsview (talk) 11:54, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
