Rhodes quickly became a major schooling center for Roman noble families, and, as the islands (and particularly Rhodes) were important allies of Rome, they enjoyed numerous privileges and generally friendly relations. These were eventually lost in 53 BC, in the turmoil following the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, after which Cassius invaded and sacked the islands.

Something is amiss here. How could the islands be lost in 53 BC in the turmoil following the assassination of Julius Caesar, when Caesar wasn't assassinated until 44 BC? Please clarify these dates. —Bkell 03:32, 7 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Err, you're right. Another source says the islands were sacked by Cassius in 42 BC, which makes a lot more sense. --Delirium 19:31, May 22, 2004 (UTC)

Hello everyone, I am adding a link to the OFFICIAL Greek Government regulated webpage for Dodecanese Islands, which is handled by the Federation of Dodecanese Islands Tourist Family accommodations in Greece, and people are removing it, saying it is spam. The website is http://www.blueislands.gr Yes, this website offers information on places to stay there, but these are the regulated government accommodations and are displayed there without any charge. This organisation is NOT making any money, and its sole purpose is to INFORM the visitors of ALL the dodecanese islands, their history, their municipalities, the villages and the areas with text and photos. Please leave this link there, since its the only Non Profit link on Dodecanese islands with so much information on them. Italian name

Probably, as the Islands were under Italian control or were de facto or de jure part of the Italian state from 1912 - to about 1943/45 or even 1947 if you consider the Treaty of peace with Italy (1947) as the official transfer. Under the section "Italian Rule", the name "Possedimenti Italiani dell'Egeo" is given. I don't speak Italian, but my best guess is that the name might mean "Italian Possesions of the Agean"

That brings up why not include the German name as the islands were under German occupation 1943-1945. And to go one step further, why not include the Ottoman (Arabic script) and Turkish (Latin script) names as the islands were under Ottoman Empire control until 1912?--TGC55 (talk) 11:29, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

I'd stick with including the former names on individual islands' pages, since those might have had some historical usage in English or otherwise be useful. Translations of the word "Dodecanese" itself don't seem that useful, since the alternate names have never been either current in English or widely used locally, unlike names for some of the particular islands (and the Italian name is just a minor spelling variant of the Greek one anyway). --Delirium (talk) 16:59, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

This is a considerable exaggeration. The Dodecanese have not usually been a single political entity with Rhodes as its capital. Intelligent Mr Toad (talk) 09:23, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Could the usual contributors of this article add a section on the Turkish minority please. You can indicate the main article Turks of the Dodecanese therein. People who read this article, at its present form, would not be informed correctly about the population on these islands, especially Rhodes and Kos, but also Kalimnos, perhaps in a smaller extent. --Why should I have a User Name?
