POV & Factuality Dispute

While we're working on the POV & Fact issues, we can also clean it up so it's styled/formatted properly. The text itself also leaves a lot to be desired. I'm seeing misuse of commas, auxillary verbs left out, incomplete sentences, and other such problems.

Factual Issues: 1) I'm not seeing what makes this particularly distinct from norm (sociology). Why shouldn't whatever's worthwhile in this article be merged? Admittedly, sociology and anthropology are not fields I'm well-educated in. 2) Is it true that Ayn Rand was a pioneer in objecting to cultural norms? Is she relevant to this article? 3) This reads to me like an original research essay, not even an original research article. Could we get citations for some of this? References? 4) Can someone who knows what this article's trying to describe put in something that will clarify what a cultural norm is? I can't tell what this article is about. 5) Bush quote needs a date at minimum, external reference (link to a transcript, for instance) would be ideal. Lots (all?) political figures have quotes attributed to them that they never said or are way out of context; Wikipedia doesn't need to add to that problem.

POV Issues: 1) Isn't in neutral language. Worst offending sentence? "The culture norm stills exists, rampant in incessant public polling and ever-churning statistics." The rest of it's still got sensationalizing diction, though: "seeping" and "finer points" are examples. 2) "But the tides have been turned, in the United States alone democracy, abolition and suffrage have triumphed over prior abhorrence." See point 1. Also, serious pro-U.S. bias. Article as a whole seems ethnocentric, dealing only with the cultural norm in the U.S. 3) Fourth paragraph: because I suspect Ayn Rand is not as relevant to the topic of cultural norms as this paragraph indicates, it strikes me as an NPOV violation (overemphasis of inappropriate expert). 4) The article seems to be making value judgments about cultural norms. I.E., "Still it cannot be said that culture norms are not a useful tool is assessing foreign entities, or ourselves."

Looking at this, and looking at the article again, I'm wondering why noone's nominated it to wp:vfd. I halfway think I should have, as I know I would definitely vote to delete this article if I came across it there. The Literate Engineer 08:22, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

The article should be redirected to norm (sociology). In its present form it contains nothing of value. The (unsopported) reference to Rand is completely out of place, as she was never regarded as an expert in the field, besides being factually inaccurate (recorded criticism of social norms dates back to the Greek philosopher Xenophanes, at least). There is nothing in it that needs to be even merged. Taragui 07:59, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
