Ballynahinch is not a bloody town! It ain't even a village!

This is a slight problem we have for a few small locations in Ireland (smaller than true towns, or indeed villages) that have articles on Wikipedia. In order that people find the articles, we've used the term "town" in its broadest sense, to encompass actual towns as well as villages and "townlands".
The issue has arisen before at Wikipedia:Irish Wikipedians' notice board, but if you would like the issue revisited, perhaps you should comment on that page.

History

The history section says: "The first inhabitants in the Galway are arrived there over 7000 years ago. Shell middens tell us about the existence of people as early as 5000 BC."

What are shell middens - is it meant to be shell mittens? Cormaggio @ 14:00, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorry - please ignore - I never knew the word midden before - ah well.. Cormaggio @ 14:03, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

More towns

Corrandulla and Bunnahevna should be added to the settlements list. Badagnani 02:51, 27 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fauna and Flora

Can someone explain the significance of the contents of this section please? Freegan 01:14, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Motto

Hi, Can anyone provide and English translation of the motto of County Galway? In Irish it is - Ceart agus Cóir. Thanks, Calen11 (talk) 08:55, 26 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

The new lead

The statement in the new lead which was inserted into the county articles is completely misleading; County Galway is one of the 32 traditional counties - yes. But the traditional county is not co-locational with modern Galway County Council. Sarah777 (talk) 12:34, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Take it to WikiProject Ireland. I'll do it for you even, have a question about it myself. Mabuska (talk) 13:01, 9 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Before starting an edit war with user Sarah777, I thought that I'd post here first. She has deleted the following phrase from the lead: " is one of the administrative counties of the Republic of Ireland and ". I believe that this phrase has the consensus of WikiProject Ireland. I'd like to know why it has bee removed. Laurel Lodged (talk) 22:17, 12 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
This is a non-issue, Laurel Lodged is not correct about what the consensus is here. I have posted the reasons on his talk page, here. Let's hope this ends this particular thread. Sswonk (talk) 04:52, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've posted a reply there. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:08, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

"The Hooker County"

In the infobox, one of the nicknames given for Galway is "The Hooker County". I'm struggling to find any reliable source for that. I've looked in books on Archive.org and Google Books, through newspaper archives, yet I don't see any mention of it. While some websites say it, they all appear to be published after August 2019, when the edit was first made, so it's not unreasonable to suggest that they just got it from this Wikipedia page. Anecdotally speaking, I have also asked a few people from Galway and they say they have never heard the county referred to as such. As a result, I have removed the nickname unless reliable sources can be found. ErnestCadine (talk) 15:52, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
