Why are some societies, or national populations at least, seen as more conformist than others? As a Brit my perception of the US is that it is a more conformist society than mine, and I wonder how this is done or whether other people think it is true. Beyond US the most conformist society is often said to be the Japanese. I wonder if this is changing with the growth of international youth culture and such-like.

I too would like to know more about trends. My own opinion is that more educated people would be less conformist because more likely to use their own discrimination; I see the Americans as being very comfortable materially, and as a result a bit casual about their own education and that of their children, with the result that they have become easily led and un-inquisitive. Only a guess, mind you, but I get to see them first hand. Haiduc 02:18, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Marking this page as in serious need of attention. I have removed some weird stuff from it which seemed very wrong, and tried to get some balance into the intro para, but it is much more a piece of work for someone with a conceptual bent rather than myself. Sjc

Merge from Conformist

This merge would seem consistent with the parallel article Nonconformism. haz (talk) 20:24, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Opposite of conformism

Since I have the oppositive personality to the conformists and I like to explore what call the dark, meaning the unknown; I do excentric things and things that challenge the way people think; I was wondering what this type of person is called. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.79.234.213 (talk) 21:58, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Individualist, maybe? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.33.59.183 (talk) 20:47, 14 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replace with redirect to Conformity

Conformity is a developed article, unlike this one which is completely unreferenced. "Conformity" and "Conformism" are synonyms: there is no justification for two articles. I will be bold and replace this article with a redirect. MartinPoulter (talk) 23:32, 26 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
