Article scope

This page deals only with the (Roman Catholic) use. However, the compline exists also in Byzantine Christianity, among Orthodox believers and Uniate Catholics. Should we mention everything in one article or break it up? Crculver 07:40, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

"Compline is the final service of the day in the Catholic tradition. " so says the article, but it is also used in the Anglican tradition. It was always the final service of the day in our Church of England school. So shouldn't Catholic be replaced by 'Christian'? DavidFarmbrough (13:37 BST 14/7/'05)

Too detailed

There shouldn't be an entire order of service here. Surely there's an external page with this information. This is out of place in an encyclopedia. Wikipedia:Don't_include_copies_of_primary_sources --Wahoofive 04:52, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I disagree. An encyclopedic article is expected to give detail. The reader is always free to skip any information he doesn't feel he needs. The problem may be more with organization (or lack of it) than content. MishaPan 07:02, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Traditional Catholic vs. Vatican II

Updated Roman Catholic Compline to current English version. But there is a great revival in the pre-Vatican II prayer forms, so perhaps the difference should be noted. --Marcusscotus1 23:43, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

The article pretty much says everything that needs to be said on the Anglican order of Compline, but all the text you added (including the text of the psalms, line by line) is really unnecessary and could be pointed to by a link, or else just encapsulated by giving the Biblical citation for the psalm, and eliminating or abbreviating all the other text and dialogue.Sigil7 15:30, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Structure

It stikes me a slightly odd that the article structure goes: 2 Compline in the West

3 Compline in the East

4 Anglican Usage

5 Lutheran Usage

"the East" and "the West" will not help those who want to know about Byzantine Rite Catholic practices (or Western Orthodox, which I guess will be mostly as Eastern Orthodox?), and those not that familiar with the subject may well wonder why Anglicanism and Lutheranism are not in the West. I guess this is a hold-over from the Catholic Encyclopedia text?

Maybe just a tweaking of the section titles would clear this up, but I'm not sure hwhat they should be changed to. 131.111.64.116 (talk) 14:38, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Compline in Lutheran churches

I wonder about this sentence: In some Lutheran Churches compline may be conducted by a layperson as the office of hours could, at least in the Roman Catholic church, always be conducted by laypersons. Is this different in the Lutheran churches?--Medusahead (talk) 11:03, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Generally laymen can lead any non-communion Lutheran service, but there are multiple Lutheran denominations who each make their own rules. —Wahoofive (talk) 02:49, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
