This was in the article but I see it redundant with Fork (Open Source):

- A code fork happens when for some reason two different versions of a program exist which are maintained by different people but were originally the same. One example of this was the splic of XEmacs from GNU Emacs. Another was the split of BSD from AT&T UNIX
