Did he prefer his whip over a gun, or was he not authorized for firearms? (Were there other Chinese on the force who were conventionally armed?)

In the case of Charlie Chan, "Chinese-Hawaiian" suggests mixed racial genetics, but Apana sounds like either he was solely Chinese-descended or his mixed genetic ancestry is being glossed over. Do we know?

Apana was ethnically Chinese, but born in the independant Kingdom of Hawaii (long before Hawaii became a U.S. territory). He was a Hawaiian subject of Chinese descent, i.e., a Chinese-Hawaiian. 71.67.104.152 (talk) 19:09, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

I was a bit confused about the "Chinese-Hawaiian" reference myself. While I do agree with the logic of Chang Apana being Chinese-Hawaiian because he was born in the Kingdom of Hawaii, today the label "Hawaiian" is usually used for people with native Hawaiian ancestry. --Alice Kim (talk) 00:20, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

I've made a short leap by inferring that he fluent in three languages, but literate only in Hawaiian; confirmation is needed IMO.

Aside from being notable as the inspiration for the Charlie Chan stories, the real life exploits that lead Briggers to him were notable, at least in Hawaii. David Stannard in his book "Honor Killing: How the Infamous 'Massie Affair' Transformed Hawai`i" notes that by 1931 was exceptional among the caliber of the Honolulu Police Department in that day (at p. 57). If anything, more needs to be added about his real life. IMHO (talk) 23:41, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

I specifically came to Wikipedia to find the article about Chang. It may need adjustment but please don't delete!

Naming convention is American English, Apana Chang is how he was known having been born in Hawaii.
