The WikiProject U.S. Counties standards might help.

Spelling

There is speculation in the text about an "attempt to Gallicize" in the spelling of the name of the county. However, this is more likely just variations in the spelling of the name of the person, whether attempts to Gallicize his name or whatever--and as a fur trader, there's a good chance he was of French descent in any case. His name is spelled Charles Cavalier, not Cavileer, in his death certificate. North Dakota Public Death Index, https://secure.apps.state.nd.us/doh/certificates/deathCertSearch.htm has CAVALIER, CHARLES 08/04/1902 Pembina MALE 84 Years 99/99/9999 North Dakota Pembina
