Proposed Mick Malthouse picture
I'm bringing this here because it's one of the clubs Mick has been associated with. I'm just seeking a few more views on a discussion underway about an image an editor has proposed for the article. See the article history and the Tak page. HiLo48 (talk) 03:18, 31 October 2018 (UTC)
Italian supporter base
How about including something about the club's large Italian supporter-base?
- A reasonable request, but we would need a reliable source to support whatever is added. HiLo48 (talk) 01:42, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
Foundation Date
The article says the following:
"The Carlton Football Club is widely cited as having formed in July 1864 though numerous sources connect it to a Carlton Football Club that existed as early as 1860-1862."
This statement is not correct. It should read:
"The Carlton Football Club is widely cited as having formed in July 1864 though numerous historical sources cite its formation three years earlier in May 1861"
unfortunately most of the sources have since been removed though it is definitely worth further research.
The Carlton Football Club itself is actively investigating its origins.

These references can all be found online and are summarised here:

- In May 1861 club resolved to form a football club with a code of laws. "Advertising". The Argus (Melbourne). No. 4, 668. Victoria, Australia. 20 May 1861. p.8.

- In 1908 reference to 1861 formation date and cites Ben James (cricket club captain) as the football club's first captain Script error: No such module "citation/CS1".

In the team of the century text:
"The five players with an asterisk(*) are also members of the AFL Team of the Century – the largest number of any AFL club."
Reads as 5 players in the AFL Team of the Century represented Carlton but Ron Barassi played 50 games for Carlton and is part of the AFL Team of the Century but not Carlton's.
Suggest rewording:
"The five players with an asterisk (*) are also members of the AFL Team of the Century, contributing to Carlton's record of having the most representatives (6) from any AFL club." 49.190.100.193 (talk) 12:34, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
I'm struggling to find indepedent sources to support the claimed formation date of 1864. This is stated in the lead, and efforts to clarify that it has not been verified and tag it for verification. The club is obviously too close to the subject so it fails verification, and even the club is not sure that it was founded in 1864 and states that it may have formed earlier.
The historic gathering on that autumn Wednesday night in 1865 appears to cast into some doubt the long-held view that the football club was actually founded in July of the previous year. Regrettably, no record of the 1864 formalisation of the football club can be found either in the club’s archives or the newspapers of the day. Nor does there appear to exist any evidence that a Carlton team actually took to the field in the winter of ’64.

As best I can tell is that it is a best guess and there is very little evidence to support it. --Rulesfan (talk) 22:53, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
The Blue Boys Official History account of 1864 foundation
An editor, obviously a fan of the club, keeps saying removing referenced "theories" (that is historical accounts) on the club's formation, except that is for those propagated by the club itself. Despite previous claims of an 1864 foundation date, the club currently admits that it neither confirms or celebrates this as its foundation date. This has been the case for almost a decade but some fans are still in denial. I've repeatedly asked for independent verifiable resources, but this editor has refused.
This was added but subsequently deleted:
In the club's official history, The Blue Boys published in 2002, author Brian Hansen states that in 1864 Carlton Cricket Club's first president, Irish-born judge Sir Redmond Barry, notably demanded the formation of a football club to give the cricketers a winter pursuit. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/ned-kelly-and-carlton-notorietys-not-the-link-20030322-gdvexv.html Ned Kelly and Carlton, notoriety's from The Age 22 March 2003 Rulesfan (talk) 02:07, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
