Dunno if its worth mentioning in the article, but in the early 80's (I may be off on the timing here) Frank Zappa "rented" the BPO for a couple of days to work on some ideas that he later recorded in his famous work with the London Symphony Orchestra. (unsigned comment from 70.127.72.90, 31 July 2006)
