Name Origin
Where did the Boston Celtics get their name from? I don't mean about the actual Celts or anything like that, but how did this basketball team get their name? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.166.118.212 (talk) 03:27, 29 June 2005 (UTC)
- My predecessor on this page, I imagine it's at least partly related to the Irish population in Boston. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.190.164.16 (talk) 19:27, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
- The name came from owner Walter Brown, apparently the name had roots in an original Celtics team in New York and was chosen due to the large Irish population in Boston. The name is pronounced the same as the Scottish football club. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.164.71.111 (talk) 03:19, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
- The name came from a discussion between owner Walter Brown and Howie McHugh, the Bruins/Boston Garden publicist and the man in charge of the upstart new NBA team. McHugh of Irish descent, had just returned from a trip to Ireland and, well aware of the strong and passionate Irish heritage in the Boston area, suggested the name Celtics, which apparently had roots in an original Celtics team in New York in the 1920's. Brown immediately latched onto the name and the Celtics were born. Interestingly, over time some of the scribes of history have been transferring credit of Celtic name to Walter Brown likely due to his status as the owner of the team. The name is pronounced with a soft C, the same as the Scottish football club. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.88.116.192 (talk) 03:56, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
Pronounciation
"While the team name is pronounced "Sell-ticks," the word "Celtic" is pronounced "Kell-tick" in Ireland."
Is there any specific explanation as to why it's normally pronounced wrong? I mean, a lot of people use the pronounciation, but it is still the only place "Celt" or "Celtic" is pronounced beginning with an S-sound. --Ifrit 21:39, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
This may sound silly, but I'm just wondering whether to pronounce their name "Seltics" or "Keltics"? Could that be put in the lead? Wrad 02:58, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I see this is already addressed. But could it be in the lead? I'm also curious why it is pronounced different. Wrad 03:00, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- It's because northerners pronounce everything wrong, including their incorrect pronunciation of "Appalachian". —ᚹᚩᛞᛖᚾᚻᛖᛚᛗ (ᚷᛖᛋᛈᚱᛖᚳ) 00:58, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- Hate to break it to you, but we were here before you. So put a sock in it, pal. Tharthandorf Aquanashi (talk) 01:10, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Sell-ticks was the New Yorker and British pronouncination, and they got their name from the New York Celtics, so they just went with it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.252.1.43 (talk) 10:13, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
2012-13 Uniforms
So I found this written at the tail end of the uniforms section:
"Beginning in 2012-13 NBA season, the Celtics will be wore the retro jerseys of the 1980s, this style will be worm uniform for the new big three of the Celtics generally used the Hardwood Classics of this uniform for the home and away rules."
Could someone translate that to English, and depending on the truthfulness of it, substitute the translated version into the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.246.148.223 (talk) 16:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Incorrect team names
Template:Hmbox In the second and third paragraphs under the "2007–2012: The "Big Three" section, some of the team names cited are incorrect. In the second paragraph - "Cleveland Dogs" should be "Cleveland Cavaliers." "Detroit Alpacas" should be "Detroit Pistons." In the third paragraph - "Pokers" should be "Lakers." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.237.6.137 (talk) 18:17, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
Repairing vandalism
I do not know how it went unnoticed for so long but some editor with three whole edits to their credit, all of them unhelpful, deleted two whole sections of this article. I have restored them, two properly-sourced sections that once more detail the years of the Celtics between 1946 and 1957.Reigndog (talk) 22:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- I also fixed additional apparent vandalism again, later on in the article. I do not know who "Evan" was supposed to be but he was not the General Manager of the Celtics from the 1960's until the 1980's, Red Auerbach was.Reigndog (talk) 22:13, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Third Uniform
A few years back, the C's had a third uniform (gold with green lettering, I believe.) Haven't checked if they still use it, they used white and green forever before that, but I figured it'd be good to place at least in the second Big 3 era section. Wanted to get your take. Potential Vandalism
The lead says the Celtics are owned by the Cleveland Cavaliers. That cant be true, and doesn't match the sidebar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.164.3.140 (talk) 15:56, 18 October 2017 (UTC)
