Why does the Booker T. Washington page have the "Conservatism in the United States" sidebar?

Why does the Booker T. Washington page have the "Conservatism in the United States" sidebar? That doesn't make sense. Is this an attempt by a right wing editor to co-opt his legacy? The edit was made in June 2023. 2600:1700:8530:68A0:3CA2:DBC9:5B46:B06E (talk) 11:01, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Neither in the article nor anywhere else that I have seen is there anything justifying this classification. Checking the editing history, I see that thus was added to the article with tge only reason given being that "someone" (unspecified) had put Washington on some (unidentified) "conservatism list". This does not seem to be adequate justification, and since it has been contested I shall remove it. JBW (talk) 17:30, 20 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Was his dinner with Roosevelt “the first time a black person publicly met the president on equal terms”?

Was his dinner with Roosevelt “the first time a black person publicly met the president on equal terms”? The Wikipedia page for this dinner lists several prior instances of US Presidents hosting black people at the White House. Walter Evertonshire (talk) 04:46, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Capitalization Black vs black

Article has some capitalization issues: a few "Black" should be "black". Noleander (talk) 15:32, 7 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

West Virginia

You left out a lot, it was my ancestors, the Ruffners here, who made sure he had an education. One of Mrs Ruffner's sons had a limb broken taking up for Booker in Malden, WV. Booker T. Washington, a prominent figure in the history of African American education, had a significant relationship with the Ruffner family, particularly Mrs. Viola Ruffner, who played a crucial role in his early education and development. The Ruffners, particularly Mrs. Ruffner, provided Washington with opportunities for learning and fostered his character development, which he later credited as highly valuable in his life.

Elaboration: Early Life and Emancipation: After Washington's family was emancipated, they moved to Malden, West Virginia, where he worked at the nearby salt furnaces. Mrs. Ruffner's Influence: Washington's first employer was Mrs. Viola Ruffner, the wife of General Lewis Ruffner, a salt and coal mine owner. Mrs. Ruffner, a former schoolteacher, took him under her wing and began teaching him to read and write. Education and Character Development: Washington credits Mrs. Ruffner with teaching him essential skills and principles, including reading, writing, and the value of a dollar. He also emphasizes the lessons in character and ethics that she instilled in him, which he considered as valuable as any formal education. Lifelong Friendship: Washington and Mrs. Ruffner developed a close and enduring friendship, with Washington acknowledging her as one of his best friends. Hampton Institute and Beyond: Inspired by Mrs. Ruffner, Washington pursued further education at Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, where he excelled and later founded the Tuskegee Institute, which became a leading center for African American education. Lots of interesting information there. Do you have any books or newspaper articles or academic journal articles that state those facts? We cannot add any information into the article unless there are books or journal articles that contain the facts. Noleander (talk) 19:49, 17 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
