Address of Bolton Wanderers

Even according to the club itself, it is based in Lostock, Bolton and not Horwich. Therefore the club is still based in Bolton. 217.196.238.225 (talk) 13:40, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is time to remove the erroneous reference to Bolton Wanderers being located in Manchester or the bogus 'Greater Manchester' area. Bolton remains in the historic county of Lancashire. There is no reference to Manchester or 'Greater Manchester' in the address for BWFC as stated in (http://www.bwfc.co.uk/page/ContactUs/0,,1004,00.html). Most Bolton fans would consider it inflammatory describe the club as being in 'Greater Manchester'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.138.224.235 (talk) 22:11, 2 April 2009 (UTC) comment left by gustyReply

Nickname

Is there any evidence that any Bolton fan at a Bolton game has ever referred to the team as 'The Trotters'? Having attended around a thousand matches I cannot recall anyone ever using this expression. I suggest that 'The Trotters' be removed as a nickname or at the very least it should be referenced within the article that 'The Trotters' is primarily used by press/media and not by the fans of the club. Thanks, Gusty —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.138.224.235 (talk) 23:15, 2 April, 2009 (UTC)81.132.37.174 (talk) 16:59, 3 April 2009 (UTC)gustyReply

Okay, i'm a bolton fan who attends every match and I know my teams nickname is the Trotters. You are a proven troll (see the talk page of one of your many IP's: User talk:86.174.25.64) who seems to have an agenda to disrupt this project. Please stop and consider finding something more constructive to do either on wikipedia or elsewhere. Maybe you should consider joining a forum and engaging in a debate about the clubs nickname there! Thank you John Sloan (view / chat) 22:33, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mr Sloan...have you ever heard any chants at the match involving the word 'Trotters'? What part of the ground do you go in? You have made your position clear regarding the term 'Trotters' but I think we need to engage the thoughts of others to come to a satisfactory conclusion. Anyone else got a view? Thanks Gusty81.132.37.174 (talk) 16:59, 3 April 2009 (UTC)gustyReply

Gusty, you're on your own on this. Any Bolton fan can tell you that BWFC's nickname is the Trotters. Just because you don't call them that doesn't mean that it's not their nickname. BBMSteve (talk) 15:36, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The nickname is ment to come from the fact that in the days before Burnden Park, one of the pitches was adjacent to a piggery and clearances often end up in there. Players had to 'trot' through the pig-pens to retrieve the balls. (http://www.mehstg.com/boltonw.htm) Tails07 (talk) 10:18, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rivals

There are a number of problems with the "rivals". For one, it is a misnomer to suggest that Blackburn are the biggest rivals. You don't see any "I only 8 Blackburn" shirts around the Reebok but plenty of "I only 8 Man U". Secondly, geographically, Wigan are the closest rivals in the Premiership, the Borough of Wigan being about a mile way. Thirdly, Bury are historically the biggest rivals, being the closest town to Bolton. And fourthly, Tranmere are deemed to be rivals after the game that the team got changed in Bolton as Sam Allardyce deemed Prenton Park's facilities to be too sparse, plus the infamous Dave Challinor towel incidents in the League Cup in 2000. It is lazy to suggest that Blackburn. Bolton get bigger attendances, plus now Burnley are in the Premiership Blackburn, if they cared anyway, now have a closer "local rival". Plus, it's not cited. Quentin X (talk) 20:22, 4 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Some Bolton supporters will also point to chants of "There's only one Wanderer's!" as a good indication that a minor rivalry is growing with midlands club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Recent allegations of tapping up from Wolverhampton Wanderers to the FA are likely to increase this rivaly amongst supporters of both clubs.

Just to say that they've been singing that for twenty years. (Quentin X (talk) 07:44, 8 October 2009 (UTC)_Reply

The rivalries section contains no mention of Manchester United, either as a "rival" or as a "club with enmity". Why is this? Go to any Bolton game and you will hear countless songs about Man U. To make no mention of this at all seems ridiculous.Mrfranco (talk) 14:42, 14 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

We hate Man U. Blackburn is just a decent derby match, I don't think most Bolton fans routinely wish them ill. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.27.200.146 (talk) 21:15, 14 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Was discussing this with an Oldham fan the other day - they have a similar issue with 'rivalries'. As with ourselves they tend to dislike Manchester United more than most but don't really see them as a proper rival, it tends to depend on the era which rivalry is bigger. In the 70s we had Blackburn, Oldham, Preston, Burnley and Blackpool, and I'd put them in that order in terms of 'ferocity'. 1980s Bury and Wigan replaced Blackburn and Oldham but the others remained. The 1990s saw the return of Blackburn, Oldham and Burnley with the two Manchester clubs and also Tranmere. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.236.18.172 (talk) 17:47, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Location of the Reebok Stadium

The Reebok Stadium stands in the area of Lostock Bolton not in the town of Horwich. My grandfather ran a farm which was located were the lostock industrial estate now sits, and the field that the Reebok Stadium was built on was my grandfathers bottom field which is still part of the Lostock area. There is a stream that runs inbetween the Reebok Stadium and a tesco extra supermarket called the Middlebrook which seperates the border of Lostock and Horwich, the area of the retail park next to the Reebok Stadium also gets its name from the stream. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnyp86 (talkcontribs) 13:11, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Early history

Despite its name, this section says very little about the early history of the club, dealing with the first 50 years in less than six lines. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 06:50, 1 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why are they called the Wanderers?

Curious about that. Doc Quintana (talk) 22:43, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because they never had a regular home back in the 1870s when they were called Christ Church and used to "wander" from field to field to play home matches. That's what I heard anyway. I haven't got a source for that though! :D Cannonbolt2 (talk) 23:15, 10 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have, although it's an offline one (see here for description). Should I add it to the article? Alzarian16 (talk) 10:09, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think you can use books as a source! A quick read of WP:SOURCE & WP:RS seem to indicate that you can anyway! I reckon you should go for it! :) Cannonbolt2 (talk) 13:23, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Good. I'll add that as soon as I get access to it, which should be tomorrow (I'm currently editing from a public computer as my home computer's lost its Internet connection for the day). Alzarian16 (talk) 14:17, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done. I also expanded the early history with some information from the same book. Alzarian16 (talk) 16:15, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Fantastic! :) Cannonbolt2 (talk) 01:18, 13 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Memorable Games

I've edited this section and removed all the games that talk about Bolton avoiding relegation as there have been more times than these in the past 130 years and the section was getting to become dominated by the recent years. I have also removed a couple of league cup semi finals as these seasons are covered in the Bolton Wanderers memorable games category. I've also removed most of the goalscorers as these are superflous, and the 1978 United game, as it wasnt the first time Bolton had done the double over United. Quentin X (talk) 13:41, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

That seems reasonable. My only worry is that we now have no games before 1983. Perhaps the 1978 United one should stay? Also, the 2007 UEFA cup game against Bayern Munich doesn't look especially important, so perhaps it could be removed as we already have one from the same competition in the same year. Alzarian16 (talk) 13:49, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think the Munich one should remain as it's not every day that Bolton play Bayern and get a result. That really is memorable...! Quentin X (talk) 14:47, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
The whole section should go. A subjective list based on the opinions of editors is original research. Besides, truly significant matches ought to be mentioned in prose in the history section. Oldelpaso (talk) 19:36, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
What about the Burnley game earlier this year. Fair enough it was only your average 1-0 local derby win, but with Owen Coyle moving clubs just weeks before, tension was very high and the Burnley fans wanted serious revenge, and in my opinion was a memorable game because we won just because of everything around it rather than the actual game itself. What do you think? Quiggers1P (talk) 22:32, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
That's one case where it might be better to mention it in the main text, since it's more about the significance of the game in the context of other events rather than the game itself. This could also be true of some of the European games, such as that qualifier and the win over Portsmouth. Alzarian16 (talk) 09:46, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm all for integrating the games into the main body, which will leave little room for doubt and also make the page look tidier. Quentin X (talk) 09:48, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stadium section

This section could really do with being cutdown IMO. It should be kept simple with the majority of info being in the main articles (Reebok Stadium & Burnden Park. Also, Does this really need to have an infobox? Surely thats what the main articles are for! Thoughts? Cannonbolt2 (talk) 13:58, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Agree completely, so I've cut it back slightly and removed the infobox. Hope no-one minds! Alzarian16 (talk) 10:57, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Also agree but think the image should stay, so I've put it back. Quentin X (talk) 11:04, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yep, no problem with that. I can't think why I removed it in the first place. Alzarian16 (talk) 11:16, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Looks a lot better now! :) Cannonbolt2 (talk) 14:03, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

bolton had pitch at pikes lane in bolton from late 1880 ish not many people know of this old ground up until they had burnden park built then it was the all singing dancing reebok stadium —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.109.236.90 (talk) 20:56, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

New kit

The new home kit has been out for a while now and has already been worn for a PL game (v Birmingham). I would update the kit myself, but I haven't a clue how! :D - Here's what the kit looks like for those who don't know: scroll down to BWFC! Cannonbolt2 (talk) 13:58, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I guess no one else knows how to update kits on Wikipedia as well then? Cannonbolt2 (talk) 14:04, 14 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Derby and rivalries?

The article does not mention anything about this. Portillo (talk) 08:47, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Kits

I've changed the description of the kits in the section, however the images of the kits are still last seasons, and I lack the ability to change it, can anyone else help by changing this? Thanks Quiggers1P (talk) 15:28, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Caretaker manager

Whilst the club announced that Jimmy Phillips and Sammy Lee would be taking control of first team affairs, it appears that Phillips is the caretaker and is being assisted by Sammy Lee and Julian Darby. As such, if no one has any problems, I have removed Sammy Lee as he appears to be in more of an assistants role. Quentin X (talk) 06:18, 22 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

1970s

Article is almost silent about the 1970s - can anyone assist 217.155.193.120 (talk) 19:29, 11 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The History section

Compared to articles on other English football clubs the "History" section of this article is much much bigger, and filled with a lot of detail that perhaps does not belong in its current position. Compare the level of detail used in the sections up to 1995 with those after, and with other similar history sections e.g. that of Reading or even that red club in Manchester. I propose to combine the Colin Todd, Sam Allardyce, Gary Megson, Owen Coyle and Dougie Freedman sections into one section and summarise them down to a level more in keeping with the rest of the History section. Any objections? Johnnaylor (talk) 17:37, 1 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I should add that as some of the detail would no doubt be lost to Wikipedia if I do this it would be moved to the relevant article for that season, e.g. here. Johnnaylor (talk) 17:41, 1 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've now cut down the relevant section, though went for 2 new sections rather than 1. The original form of the History section has been moved to History of Bolton Wanderers F.C. where the pre-1995 history could be appropriately expanded out from its current summary form. Comments welcome! Johnnaylor (talk) 19:26, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nickname

I have no idea how reliable the cited website may be for the various derivations of the "Trotter" nickname. Please be aware that a "trotter" (verb: "trotting") had a somewhat more sinister overtone locally than mere practical joking. Try searching for those words in the book "Bibliographia Boltoniensis" at https://archive.org/stream/cu31924029566019/cu31924029566019_djvu.txt - a joker, or a scammer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.115.118.246 (talk) 09:55, 18 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Burden Park Disaster

In 1946, a disaster struck Bolton Wandereres when 33 spectators lost there life in a crush and ca 400 where injured. the disaster known as Burnden Park disaster has a target article. Its the first major sporting disaster in English football. 12 years prior Munich air disaster. And x years before Heysel, as well as Bradford city stadiume fire and Hillsborugh disaster. Each of these more resent disaster are mentioned in the introduction of each involved clubs article and I think Burden Park's disaster should be no expection. Bolton Wanderers as club has taken steps in reasent years to make this tragedy more reconized, a black day in English football history. Thus I made an attempt to include it in the introduction of Bolton Wanderers article. DoctorHver (talk) 00:31, 29 April 2016 (UTC)DoctorHver (talk) 00:23, 29 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Current event tag

I have tagged this article as being affected by a current event, because the BBC has reported (archive) that the Administrators intend to dissolve the club on or before Wednesday. However, I feel that we can only be sure if there are no more takeover offers that could lead to the EFL granting another extension to the deadline (currently Tuesday, 17:00 BST). --Minoa (talk) 12:34, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Goal nets

An addition was made as follows:

On 1 January 1890, nets hung on goal posts were first used in a League match, between Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest. Civil engineer John Alexander Brodie (1858–1934) designed the nets.[1]

However, although attributed to a published work, other sources contradict this assertion, suggesting Nottingham Forest's Town Ground was first used for a game where goals featured crossbars and nets in 1891, while Nottingham Forest did not play their first league game until September 1892. I have therefore removed this assertion, pending a more reliable attribution. Paul W (talk) 13:02, 12 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
