Talk:Bodice ripper
I think this is entirely wrong. It is perjorative to the romance book industry to ascribe or limit the term "bodice ripper" to such a narrow definition. In my opinion, bodice ripper refers to any romantic novel that induces heart pounding tension in the reader and not necessarily inclusive of the elements the writer here ascribes to it as having by way of definiton. Although I would agree that most people have come to associate the term bodice ripper to refer usually to a novel set in a historical setting rather than a contemporary one, as for the plot and story line elements as per its relevance to a definition, I would have to disagree entirely. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.67.253.203 (talk • contribs) .
- Well, the "heart-pounding tension" is a bit too broad. I imagine there are people who have felt heart-pounding tension when reading Wuthering Heights, which hardly qualifies. --Saforrest 03:16, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
- Honestly, bodice ripper isn't a sub-genre of anything. Historical romance is a proper genre, used by the publishing industry and by readers alike; bodice ripper is a nickname given to historical romances that have a swashbuckler cover (bare-chested man embraces woman with heaving, corseted bosom). It's also not uncommon for bodice rippers to still feature a pouty heroine who has an antagonistic love/hate relationship with the hero. But calling bodice rippers a sub-genre is like calling trash novels a sub-genre of literature. Doesn't make any sense!
I would disagree, a bodice ripper is a distinct writing style. It usually consists of some type of forced seduction or rape and violence. As a romance reader with over 1000 historical romance books read, it is definitely a a sub genre of romance. If you do a simple internet search of "bodice rippers" you will see it is treated as such in the romance community. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:187:8301:DDE0:FD90:D74C:4FFA:83CC (talk) 18:14, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
Redirect to romance novel?
I'd like to redirect this article to romance novel. I have been expanding the romance novel article, and it will include mention of the bodice ripper days of the 1970s and 1980s. I don't believe this article is necessary anymore. Please respond here if you are opposed to this move. Karanacs 20:22, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
I am going to redirect this page to romance novel. This article is completely uncited and is not accurate. Please note that the romance novel page does mention "bodice-rippers" and has incorporated the content from this article that could be sourced. It is the more appropriate place for this content. If you feel that any content is missing from the romance novel page that is on this page, please add it if it is appropriately sourced.Karanacs 20:50, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Morality Guidelines
I a editing the section about morality guidelines out of this article due to the fact that after reading it here I contacted Avon books a while back and they told me that in fact no such guidelines exist.
Please note also that if the new books are somewhat tame it is probably on account of editors publishing policy and not because of an official policy. 216.255.40.133 04:37, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
