Distribution

Template:Ping The whole of the "Distribution and habitat" section currently reads:

• "This species breeds in vegetated areas of freshwater lakes across Europe, Asia, Africa, northern South America and the southwest and western United States. The bird migrates in winter, mostly to the Pacific Coast where it ranges south to El Salvador on a regular basis; vagrants may occur as far as Costa Rica."

I feel this is wholly inadequate for a GA. The range map, assuming it is accurate, shows a breeding range, a wintering range and a resident range. You really need to include more detailed information on its distribution, and what about the missing information on habitat? The IUCN site has plenty of information on its migratory movements but the article tells us that most birds migrate to the Pacific Coast (which needs disambiguating) and that the bird is a vagrant to Costa Rica. Really? The mistake that has been made is to take a study on a particular population of the bird, and to generalise from it in the article as if it applied to all the 4 million birds around the world. Move to Eared grebe

Audubon, Sibley's field guides, Ebird, etc., all use the common name Eared grebe rather than Black-necked grebe, the Wikipedia article title is rather jarring and out of place. Move it to Eared grebe? Aidanyyyy (talk) 14:43, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

My version of Ebird calls it black-necked grebe. The Collins Field Guide calls it black-necked grebe. The IOC world bird list calls it black-necked grebe. Eared grebe is the North American name. Wikipedia follows the IOC for English names, hence what I would call a Slavonian grebe is a synonym of horned grebe on Wikipedia. Quetzal1964 (talk) 12:17, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
