I am curious why so much is included about the referee? And if you are going to include it know that the referee also was heavily scrutinized for not stopping the bout in the 6th round when Benny scored a knock down. Griffith stood by the count of 8 but could not stand without the aid of the ropes and referee Ruby Goldstein literally had to pry Griffith's hand from the ropes. Then as now, the referee should not have interfered and have continued the count until the fighter can stand without the aid of the ropes, the fight would most likely have been over, Paret being the victor as it was reported Griffith appeared "drowsy and listless", as though he had not fully recovered from the knockdown for the next several rounds. So the referee was obviously not running a tight ship...

I have a much more thorough account of what occurred during the fight than what was written here.

The April 2nd 1962 Sports Illustrated magazine had a story that covers the fight and death of Benny Paret.
