I've removed these sentences because they look contentious: "Before his death, his company, Hotchkiss et Cie, started to build internal combustion engines for moving and positioning guns in the field of battle. This resulted in the production of the Hotchkiss engine, later a rolling chassis, soon to be followed by a complete motor car in 1904."
I wonder if there's a reliable source that can be cited before putting them back in.
Most French websites say that the Hotchkiss company got into car-making through first supplying parts for other companies in the early 1900s. The invention of the internal combustion engine came around 1885, the year of Hotchkiss's death, so if his company had been working on them before then you might expect to see the company listed along with Daimler and Benz as inventors of the internal combustion engine. This may be possible, however, so let's put back the dropped sentences if there's a good source to support them. Adrian Robson 20:33, 24 May 2005 (UTC)
