The Tribe

I am from the Order of the Arrow. It's Leni Lenape, the tribe along the Delaware River.

Which tribe(s)?

Which tribes does this apply to? Is the term in a particular language? RJFJR 21:17, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

The term applies to the Delaware tribe, also known in their own language as the Leni Lenape (which means "first men"). The language is known as "Lenape." It is similar to other Algonkian languages such as Abnaki, Algonquin, Chippewa, Fox, Illinois, Kickapoo, Menominee, Ottawa, Penobscot, Potawatomi, Powhatan, Sauk, and Shawnee. The word "Illinois," meaning "first," is essentially the same word as "Leni," and even sounds similar. The two were probably much closer in pronunication before French and English settlers heard them and recorded them in two different European languages.PGNormand 06:32, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
