Some people try pronouncing this as [ITE-nee], but the Anglicized pronunciation is [ET-nee] according to The Dictionary of Classical Mythology (JE Zimmerman, Harper & Row, 1964). The Greek ai is the diphthong written ae in Latin, and generally reduced to e in US English (as in encyclopedia for encyclopaedia, etc.; Aitne is a variant spelling of the volcano Etna). The more Hellenic spelling ai is generally pronounced ay (compare Gaea jee'-a vs. Gaia gay'-a), but in closed syllables this still reduces to a short e. --kwami
