The city is named Agency, because in the early 19th century, the United States established an Indian agency just southeast of where the current town is located. As Iowa territory was settled by farmers and immigrants moving west, the many tribes of native american indians signed the treaty that formally granted ownership of the territory to the United States. Maj. General Joseph Street, along with Chief Wa pel lo and Chief Ke o kuk of the Sac and Fox tribes signed the treaty at the Agency House which was General Street's Home. The cities motto "where it all began" comes from the fact that it was at Agency where Iowa statehood began. The Street family and Chief Wapello are buried near the site just outside of town.

Agency Iowa is a friendly town that I call home.
