Overly Rosy?
The assessment of the 400 system seems perhaps too cheery. Some items:
- Old bridges too low on 400?
- In article on 400. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- very narrow shoulders on inside lane on 400, no room for breakdown in inside lane
- Source, might be in 400 article. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- a lot of bridge abutments look pretty close
- Source needed. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Despite the sprawl or complexity of some interchanges, "You can't get there from here", incomplete interchanges:
- 427 South to 401 East (have to take 409)
- 401 East to 403
- 403 South to QEW East
- This is not really discussed in sources, nor generally an issue for traffic movement (aside from the 403-401-410 interchange in recent years with the westward expansion of the GTA. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I've got a link here, I am sure it is not considered a reliable source, but I think you can see the gist of it [2] Feldercarb (talk) 23:19, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- some exits are on left, say 401 to allen road.
- Generally mentioned in individual cases, especially on 407 article. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Several freeway to freeway interchanges feature pretty tight turns (although generally lightly used) -- "cloverstacks" -- looking at you 407/410
- Need a source. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- weird 410 to 10 connector
- As above. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- No overall numbering system, unlike US interstate
- Generally not true, nor significant for an intraprovincial network. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Interstates use even numbers for E-W routes; odd for N-S; N-S freeways generally start from low number (I5) in west and are numbered sequential. "A system". 400 series has no such ordering.
- I think Quebec Autoroutes have a similar numbering plan Feldercarb (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- Generally not true, nor significant for an intraprovincial network. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Wacky 403/QEW numbering (the 407 through Halton should have been 403) leaving the 403 non-contiguous
- Discussed in both 403 and 407 articles. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- the highway from Kitchener to Guelph should have been 407, but apparently will be "new highway 7"
- Not true. There has never been an official 400-series number for the planned twinning since its conception in the mid-1960s. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- exactly - it should "logically" be 407, but the planners have done otherwise Feldercarb (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

- "Backwards" guidance signage - "QEW via 427" rather than "427 to QEW"
- You need to give a reason why this is significant. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- seems backwards from what an average person might expect; eg I am looking for/expecting to get on the 427, but the sign leads with "QEW"
- You need to give a reason why this is significant. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Kings Highway markers on 400 series are shown as "Crowns", but road-side markers are "Crown and shield"
- The crown is the shield. Intersecting roads use the junction crown (the compressed one), nearby ones use a green crown with "to" above the number... at least that's what they are SUPPOSED to do according to the Ontario Traffic Manual. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Roadside markers have a "shield" (like a coat of arms) topped with a crown. Overhead markers use just the "crown". Two styles of marker.
- In Quebec, I believe the roadside Auto-route markers are exactly the same as the over-head markers. Why does Ontario have two different styles of marker?
- You can see it here: Ontario has a "guide" sign (crown only) and a route marker (crown and shield). No other province has two styles, if this website is correct. [3]

- Wasn't the 403 touted as "death highway" for a while?
- Yes, discussed in its article under "Controversy". - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Carnage alley on 401
- Mentioned in the History section of the 401 article. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- 407 was investigated by PEO prior to opening for design safety
- Again. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- three highways had safety issue flagged, therefore "systemic" issue, bad design Feldercarb (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2018 (UTC)
- Again. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- High mast lighting on 403 on one side of the road, not down the middle, in Mississauga
- Significance? Likely due to light pollution mitigation because the northwest side is a hydro corridor. Need a source though. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- just poor design, my opinion -- think it was cheaper to run down one side, rather than route wires under the medianFeldercarb (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

- no lighting on some urban portions of QEW and 403 in Mississauga
- As above. Both answers belong in the 403 article itself. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- I am supposing it is a "systemic" problem in that there is no apparent standard for lighting. QEW in Oakville is lit, Mississauga is not; Toronto isFeldercarb (talk) 17:03, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

- don't use reflectors or cat's eyes for lane markings
- Snowplows. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- opposing centre lanes often close adjacent (no grass median) -- at night looking into oncoming headlights
- Tall wall was designed to mitigate this, generally not a complaint, but please let me know if there are any sources on this! - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- no reflectors on 7West to 8South flyover bridge in Kitchener (oops freeways which aren't 400 series for some reason)
- Aren't they rebuilding this? Likely temporary or unnecessary. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- might be logical to upload all freeways to province (red hill creek, the linc, gardiner, DVP), but no, we downloaded the QEW to Gardiner
- Agreed, but only fantasy at this time. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- Is the express/collector system really effective? the 407 is 12 lanes in one section without collectors
- I'm not sure, it's based on a 1960s technique. I don't believe the proximity of the transfers and exits makes it effective in comparison to say, I-271 in Cleveland (though volumes are incomparable), but that's just a personal opinion. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

- I've replied in indents with my signature. I don't disagree with most points, but they are subjective and require a good source to mention on any of the highway articles. More importantly, this article is just a summary of the individual articles for each highway; most of the text is a direct copy of the respective ledes for each article. - Floydian τ ¢ 00:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
I think the idea was to indicate there are a number of "flaws" with the 400-system.— Preceding unsigned comment added by {} (talk • contribs)
- Indeed. My reply was generally to the tune of "provide some references to backup these observations and I'll work them into the article." - Floydian τ ¢ 17:53, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
