Template:Short description

In mathematics, given a positive integer g, the Siegel upper half-space ℋg of degree g is the set of g×g symmetric matrices over the complex numbers whose imaginary part is positive definite. It was introduced by Siegel (1939). The space ℋg is the symmetric space associated to the symplectic group Sp(2g,ℝ). When g=1 one recovers the Poincaré upper half-plane.

The space ℋg is sometimes called the Siegel upper half-plane.[1]

Definitions

As a complex domain

The space ℋg is the subset of Mg(ℂ) defined by :

ℋg={X+iY:X,Y∈Mg(ℝ),Xt=X,Yt=Y,Y is definite positive}.

It is an open subset in the space of g×g complex symmetric matrices, hence it is a complex manifold of complex dimension g(g+1)2.

This is a special case of a Siegel domain.

As a symmetric space

The symplectic group Sp(2g,ℝ) can be defined as the following matrix group:

Sp(2g,ℝ)={(ABCD):A,B,C,D∈Mg(ℝ),ABt−BAt=0,CDt−DCt=0,ADt−BCt=1g}.

It acts on ℋg as follows:

Z↦(AZ+B)(CZ+D)−1 where Z∈ℋg,(ABCD)∈Sp2g(ℝ).

This action is continuous, faithful and transitive. The stabiliser of the point i1g∈ℋg for this action is the unitary subgroup U(g), which is a maximal compact subgroup of Sp(2g,ℝ).Script error: No such module "Footnotes".Script error: No such module "Check for unknown parameters". Hence ℋg is diffeomorphic to the symmetric space of Sp(2g,ℝ).

An invariant Riemannian metric on ℋg can be given in coordinates as follows:

ds2=tr(Y−1dZY−1dZ¯),Z=X+iY.

Relation with moduli spaces of Abelian varieties

Siegel modular group

The Siegel modular group is the arithmetic subgroup Γg=Sp(2g,ℤ) of Sp(2g,ℝ).

Moduli spaces

Script error: No such module "Labelled list hatnote". The quotient of ℋg by Γg can be interpreted as the moduli space of g-dimensional principally polarised complex Abelian varieties as follows.Script error: No such module "Footnotes".Script error: No such module "Check for unknown parameters". If τ=X+iY∈ℋg then the positive definite Hermitian form H on ℂg defined by H(z,w)=w*Y−1z takes integral values on the lattice ℤg+ℤgτWe view elements of ℤg as row vectors hence the left-multiplication. Thus the complex torus ℂg/ℤg+ℤgτ is a Abelian variety and H is a polarisation of it. The form H is unimodular which means that the polarisation is principal. This construction can be reversed, hence the quotient space Γg∖ℋg parametrises principally polarised Abelian varieties.
