Nalanda College (Template:Langx) is a Buddhist school in Sri Lanka that provides primary and secondary education for boys.[1][2][3][4] The school was founded by P. de S. Kularatne as an offshoot of Ananda College, Colombo, and was officially registered as a separate institution on 1 November 1925.[5]
History
In 1922, a section of Ananda College was moved to Campbell Place, Colombo, based on a proposal made by Patrick de Silva Kularatne, a leading Buddhist educator. L. H. Mettananda was appointed as the principal of this institution, which was called the Ananda branch. W. E. Fernando was the headmaster, and Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thera became its first Buddhist teacher.[6][7] In 1924, Kularatne spent Rs. 5,500 to purchase a Template:Cvt of land close to the Campbell Place playground and built sixteen classrooms for the new school. Governor Gregory Thompson laid the foundation stone for the building. Out of sixteen classrooms, he used two rooms for the principal's office and staff members, another two for the laboratories, and the rest twelve rooms for the classes. Three hundred and thirty students of Ananda were transferred under L. H. Mettananda in 1924.[8]
Kularatne helped register the institution as a separate school on 1 November 1925. The new school was given its motto Apadana Sobhini Panna, and the school name Nalanda was also proposed by Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero. The English and the Sinhala versions are "Character illumines Wisdom" and "Yahapath Charithayen Praggnawa Opanangwe" respectively. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thera selected this motto from the Anguttara Nikaya, Tika Nipatha, Bala Waggo Lakkana Sutta.[9]
On 1 January 1926, Kularatne appointed Dr. Gunapala Piyasena Malalasekera as the first registered principal of the newly formed Nalanda College[10] and transferred L. H. Metthanada to Ananda College as vice principal. Malasekara launched several projects, making plans for the collection of funds for the construction of buildings, and later commenced a bulletin titled Nalanda, he also arranged 15-minute Buddhist talks at the daily students' assembly and took many steps to promote the Buddhist environment in the school.
Kularatne laid the foundation stone for the second building on 30 March 1926. By the end of 1926, the number of students had increased to 550. Later, he borrowed money from Anagarika Dharmapala to purchase land for the primary section which was settled by Malalasekara. The student assembly hall is named Malalasekara Theater after him.[11][12]
Evolution
The college has science and computer laboratories, lecture halls, auditoriums, and hostels.[13][14] The main language at Nalanda is Sinhala, while students can select English from year six onwards.[15] Students of Nalanda College have consistently participated in national-level examinations, with some achieving high grades in Ordinary Level and Advanced Level exams, as well as in various sports competitions.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]
In 2011, Nalanda students won first place in the world at the Oracle Thinkquest Application Development. They also won first place in the International Students Biotechnology Competition and the 14th International Convention on Students Quality Control Circles, held in Lucknow, India.[28][29][30][31][32] Students of Nalanda College Colombo also have participated in research activities.[33][34][35][36][37] In 2017, a student of the Research Forum won a silver medal for his research, "Deposition of air pollutants on pollen grains and occurrence of respiration allergies among humans at the International Conference of Young Scientists in Germany". It was the first time Sri Lanka participated in an event as a competitive country.[38][39]
Awards
Nalanda College, Colombo, presents various awards recognising student achievements in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. Felicitation ceremonies are conducted each year.[40][41][42][43]

- Nalanda Keerthi Sri (Template:Langx) - Jayaweerage Samantha was the founder of the Nalanda Keerthi Sri Award Festival. As the media Secretary of the Nalanda College Old Scouts' Association (2003–2004), the first edition occurred on 27 September 2003. The award recognises alumni for their contributions in various professional fields, serving as an inspiration for current students.[44][45][46][47][48]

Campbell Place
The College's playground, Campbell Place,[71][72] is named after Sir George William Campbell, the first Inspector General of Police of British Ceylon.[73] The adjoining road, previously called Campbell Place, has been renamed Ananda Rajakaruna Mawatha, in recognition of Ananda Rajakaruna, a pioneer of Sinhala poetry.[74][75]

Nalanda College occupies a playground at Campbell Place,[76][77][78] a modern sports complex,[79][80] a modern squash court,[81][82] a swimming pool,[83] a shooting range,[84] Boxing ring [85] and other sports facilities.[86]

Cricket
Battle of the Maroons
The encounter was first played in 1924 and the match is played as a three-day [119] encounter starting from this year 2025 (the 95th in the series - the match was not played in 1943, 1944, and 1945 due to World War II and in 1948) at Singhalese Sports Club grounds. Nalanda are the current holders of the Trophy having won it in 2022 under the leadership of Dineth Samaraweera.[120][121] The first Battle of the Maroons was played in 1925 and Nalandians were led by B.S. Perera[122] while N M Perera led Anandians. Nalanda won the inaugural contest. [123] Sri Lanka's first Test cricket captain, the late Bandula Warnapura, was a proud product of Nalanda College,[124][125] while Arjuna Ranatunga, who captained the Sri Lankans in the World Cup victory in 1996, was a product of Ananda College.[126] This year's 95th encounter ended in a draw.[127] Battle of the Maroons 48th one day encounter that was played this year was abandoned due to rain.[128] In 1951, Stanley Jayasinghe became the first Nalandian [129] to represent All Ceylon Cricket Team while still being a schoolboy playing against Pakistan in Pakistan.[130]
The match is contested for the Dr. N. M. Perera Memorial Trophy.[131] The one day 50 overs match is played for P de S Kularatne trophy.[132]
Nalanda vs Trinity

The annual cricket match between Nalanda College, Colombo, and Trinity College, Kandy, is played for the Mahela-Sanga Trophy.
Water polo
Nalanda plays it's annual water polo encounter[133] with Royal College, Colombo for the Royal-Nalanda Challenge Shield. [134] The inaugural encounter was played in 2017.[135][136][137][138]
Golf
Nalanda College plays it's annual Golf tourney with Ananda College Colombo at Royal Colombo Golf Club.[139][140]

War Memorial and remembrance
Each year, students and alumni commemorate the loss of 41 alumni who died in the Sri Lankan civil war.[167][168][169][170] A war memorial is situated between the main oldest buildings of the college.[171]
Nalanda College Junior Old Boys' Association

Its objective is to enhance the interests of the college, past and present students by maintaining relationships among alumni, and with their alma mater. Each year, the union organises events such as Future Minds, Nalanda Walk, Olcott Memorial Old Boys' Cricket Tourney, Ranaviru Upahara, and more.[172][173][174]
