History

Mutual was laid out in the 1840s and incorporated as a village in 1869.

Geography

Mutual is located at the intersection of State Routes 29 and 161. The nearest stream is Buck Creek, a tributary of the Mad River, which flows about 1 mile (1½ km) west of the community. It is located approximately midway between the city of Urbana (the county seat of Champaign County) and the village of Mechanicsburg.

The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.69.

The median age in the village was 45.5 years. 23.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 1.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.1% were from 25 to 44; 25% were from 45 to 64; and 26% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 51.0% male and 49.0% female.
