Morganton, Georgia

Morganton is a city in Fannin County, Georgia, United States. The population was 285 at the 2020 census.

History

Prior to European colonization, the area that is now Morganton was inhabited by the Cherokee people and other Indigenous peoples for thousands of years.

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Morganton in 1856. The town's name is a transfer from Morganton, North Carolina.

Morganton served as the seat of Fannin County from 1854 until 1895, when the seat was transferred to Blue Ridge.

Geography

Morganton is located in eastern Fannin County at (34.876616, -84.245432), on the northeast side of Blue Ridge Reservoir. Georgia State Route 60 passes through the city, leading northwest to U.S. Route 76 and southeast to Suches. Via SR 60 and old US 76, it is west to Blue Ridge, the county seat.

As of the census of 2000, there were 299 people, 121 households, and 87 families living in the small country town. The population density was . There were 152 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the town was 99.67% White, 0.32% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.33% of the population.

There were 121 households, out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.4% were married couples living together, 23.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 47.3% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.15.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 65.5 males.
